Guns in the locker
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/30/AR2009123002524.html

PERHAPS THE situation is as innocent as described by Gilbert Arenas. Newly sensitized by the birth of his daughter to the danger of having guns around his house, the Washington Wizards star says he meant no harm when he brought the unloaded weapons to Verizon Center for safekeeping. But, in doing so, it seems that Mr. Arenas might have run afoul of D.C. law -- and it's important that authorities do their job investigating the matter.

D.C. police officials confirmed Tuesday that they are assisting the U.S. attorney's office with a probe into the circumstances under which Mr. Arenas brought guns to the arena. The incident occurred on or about Dec. 10 and was disclosed on Christmas Eve, when CBSSports.com reported that the NBA was looking into the matter. The league prohibits weapons at its sports facilities; more critically, D.C. law strictly prohibits the carrying of guns, either openly or concealed.

Mr. Arenas has said he wasn't aware of the law and that he turned the guns, reported to have been properly registered in Virginia, over to team security with instructions to give them to the police. Why Mr. Arenas didn't choose a more straightforward method of relinquishing the weapons, and why he held the guns in his Verizon Center locker for a week, are some of the questions authorities need to get answered. D.C. officials say that it's not unusual for people, mainly out-of-town tourists, to unwittingly violate the city's gun laws, believing (wrongly) that there is no harm as long as the weapons are unloaded. Generally, they end up charged with a misdemeanor.

Mr. Arenas's celebrity should neither shield him nor make him a target for exaggerated penalties. It might, though, help him in delivering an important message about guns being neither glamorous nor desirable. "I don't need these anymore," he said of his weapons. That's something we hope his young fans hear.

Wizards Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton pull pistols on each other

EXCLUSIVE
Guess they're still the Bullets at heart.

NBA all-star Gilbert Arenas and his Washing ton Wizards teammate Javaris Crittenton drew guns on each other in the team's locker room during a Christmas Eve dispute over a gambling debt, The Post has learned.

League sources say the pistol-packing point guards had heat ers at the ready inside the Verizon Center, the Washington, DC, home of the Wizards -- whose name was changed from the Bullets over gun- vi olence concerns.

It was the three- time all-star Arenas, 27, who went for his gun first, sources said, draw ing on the 22-year-old Crit tenton, who quickly brandished a firearm as well.

It was not clear whether other teammates saw the shocking standoff, which happened on a practice day.

The duel in DC -- unprecedented in sports history -- was sparked when Critten ton became enraged at the vet eran guard for refusing to make good on a gambling debt, a source said.

"I'm not your punk!" Crittenton shouted at Arenas, according to a league source close to the Wizards.

That prompted Arenas to draw on Crittenton, who then also grabbed for a gun, league security sources said.

A playground pal of Crittenton's from Atlanta, Kendrick "Bookie Ball" Long, confirmed the locker-room standoff and said he learned of it directly from the third-year player out of Georgia Tech.

"He [Arenas] was f- - -ing with him; he [Crittenton] was just defending himself!" declared Long, who said the dispute was over money but would not elaborate.

The Wizards announced on Christmas Day that Arenas had admitted to bringing guns to the locker room and had turned them over to team security. No ammunition was handed over. (snip)

TNB. I disagree with DC's infringement on the 2nd Amendment, but considering their untermenschen population...I understand some of their reasoning for the laws.

if the founders knew we were going to be a 'multicultural society', would they have written the 2nd amendment?

Dude they didn't even want blacks to vote, they certainly wouldn't have given them the right to bear arms!!!

This story is unintentionally hilarious to me, millionaire athletes still acting like ghetto thugs

Now this a first in NBA history, bringing a firearm (loaded or not) in a stadium of 20,000 people. Only a black guy can pull that off. David Stern has a lot of explaining to do on this one. If it leads to a lengthy suspension, great! But, I prefer a permanent ban!

I love how afflete Arenas says he "didn't know" it was illegal to bring the gun into the stadium. I also love how Adrian Peterson "didn't know" he was going 50 miles over the speed limit. These sure are some bright boys.

Most folks are unaware of particular gun laws. Now DC goes beyond the pale in their Orwellian gun laws, but it's illegal to bring a weapon into a venue of 5,000 or more in any state. I am a licenced concealed carry citizen, and their are plenty of places that I can't carry, but I've gone through multiple classes learning the various laws, while an ignorant athlete probably has no idea.

I think that those two idiot affelets should be suspended a month, which translates into several million dollars. This should correct there "didn't know" ignorance.

I think it's common sense that you can't bring a weapon into a stadium. Ask any 12 year old and I am sure they will give you the correct answer. With these great affletes it's always an excuse.

IMO, we responsible, law-abiding Americans should (in theory) be able to tote a piece just about anywhere, but that sadly isn't the case. Even for licensed carriers (like FBD), there are alotta restrictions (which is BS...but still the law). These dumb@$$ affletes may have not known (or just ignored the law), but ignorance isn't a legit defense.

the Bill of Rights specifically states in the 2nd Amendment that we are allowed to carry guns anytime and anywhere we feel like it. that "laws" exist that deny this right given to us by the founding document of our government is an outrage. most all ofthese so-called "gun crimes" are nothing of the sort. rather, they're illegally charged forhaving something the Constitution says they areallowed to have. "criminal?" hardly.
furthermore, i have no problem with negroes toting a handgun. but i do have one regret in this particular instance...

in addition to taking out there "burners," i just wish they would've pulled the triggers on their sideways-held gangsta bangers and taken out two of the problems in the American population. if you catch my meaning.

Many on this site feel that the gun laws are too strict and that we should be able to carry guns everywhere. I don't feel that way at all. Can you imagine if all these negroes where allowed to carry guns everywhere? We would be in much more danger for our lives than we are now.

The Constitution was written with white men in mind. Strickly speaking by original intent if the founding fathers were asked should blacks be free to carry guns where ever they go they would have laughed themselves silly then asked "are you serious?"

From a practical viewpoint it's one thing to carry and another to respect the private property of others. If someone bans bringing handguns onto thier property then that is their right. I'm sure Madison Square Gardens has rules against carrying handguns on their property-which is their right. That should be the real law that they broke. And that law would be a civil law, not a criminal law.

A business could also have a rule prohibiting certain people from carrying weapons on their property. Say a rule or policy prohibiting black men or hispanics or whatever. That should also be allowed but of course would not be allowed due to some specious expansive view of "civil rights".Edited by: jaxvid

These two could have played swarthy Mexicans in Speghetti Westerns of the 60's. In the movies the two idiot criminals usually kill each other and a character played by Eli Wallach scoops up their loot though....

Arenas unloaded guy story, a phony excuse if there ever was one is falling apart as he has to tell his story under oath. look for Crittenden to get suspended too. Although personally I'm on Crittendon's side I mean c'mon he's not Arenas bitch ya know!

Report: Crittenton Drew a Loaded Gun

By most accounts, the incident that occurred between Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton in Wasington's locker room last month involved four unloaded guns, all belonging to Arenas. As the story goes, Arenas presented the guns to Crittenton with a note that said "Pick One" as a joke following a recent argument about a card game in which Crittenton said he'd shoot Arenas in his surgically-repaired knee.

But, according to Mike Wise of the Washington Post, two unnamed eyewitnesses have confirmed there was a fifth gun involved in the incident, belonging to Crittenton, which he allegedly loaded with a clip of ammunition and cocked after being angered by Arenas' note.

Crittenton apparently never pointed the gun at anyone, but he did manage to clear the room, as the other players present in the room retreated to the locker room. Arenas turned over his guns to the team's security shortly after the incident, but Crittenton's gun was never found.

According to the Post, Arenas told Crittenton not to speak of the incident, saying he'd take full responsibility, but ultimately was forced to reveal the truth when speaking with the district attorney under oath on Monday.

Until now, Arenas has faced the brunt of scrutiny and criticism, with Crittenton portrayed as a relatively innocent bystander. If this version of events is confirmed, however, it's only a matter of time before Crittenton, who hasn't played a minute this season because of injury, joins Arenas on indefinite suspension, not to mention whatever legal consequences that may follow.
