Turkey's Ramil Guliyev clocked 9.97 over 100m in Bursa to equal Jimmy Vicaut's European leading mark



Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev has been in some of the best form of his career over 200m this season but the 27-year-old demonstrated he is just as proficient over 100m with a 9.97 clocking at the Turkish Super League in Bursa, Turkey on Thursday (6).



Guliyev produced one of the standout performances at the European Athletics Team Championships First League in Vaasa, Finland where he sped to a championship record of 20.20 on a cool and breezy afternoon. This was followed by a victory in the Paris Diamond League the following weekend in 20.15 despite not being sure if he was even going to start due to a stomach virus.



Guliyev was at full health on home soil in Bursa yesterday evening when he sped to a lifetime best in the 100m of 9.97 to join Jimmy Vicaut at the top of the European rankings. This was his first time under the ten second-barrier, although he was credited with a hand-timed 9.9 at the start of the season.



In doing so, Guliyev became just the sixth European sprinter in history to have broken the sub-10 barrier for the 100m and the sub-20 barrier for the 200m. After finishing sixth at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, Guliyev sped to a 19.88 clocking in Zagreb less than a fortnight later to move to sixth on the European all-time lists.

Great news limitless. I did not think he had it in him. He could even possibly top Lemaitre's 9.92 at the worlds next month when the competition gets faster and more challenging. I think he has a 9.94 in him maybe.

Just saw the video. Absolutely no competition except one guy. I can't find the wind on it but it looks like he shut it down the last 8 to 10 feet or so. I wonder what he could have run if he ran all the way in?
This is going to piss some people off but I made a comment after the Paavo Nurvi race where he looked facially like he was in his late 30's. He is only 27 I believe. He kind of had that sickly Kostas Kenteris look to him. We all know Kenteris was doping whether or not he ever got caught. I am not implying anything as I am not even an amateur on PED's , but he just has a sickly look to him. Maybe its the mangy hair or whatever but something is making my spidey sense tingle here. I hope he is clean.

The season is still young, and he is red hot. He now has the experience and confidence. I expect him to get new PBs in both races.

He is a comeback story. He was neck and neck with Lemaitre as a junior, then sort of disappeared when he was looking for a country. So many of our people have just faded into the shadows. I was afraid he might be yet another one.

His father who was his primary trainer died a few months after that junior race with Lemaitre. I believe that, some nagging injuries and the move from Armenia slowed him down primarily.

Unbelievable. We started following Guliyev so many years ago that I never would have believed it could still happen. However, watching this race and his early 10.02, he's flying and doing so consistently. With him running this fast in the short sprint, he is now a genuine dark horse contender for the gold in the World championships.

So now we have two white sprinters go go sub 10 and sub 20. Both Lemaitre and now Guliyev. I'm so happy
for Ramil. He has trained so hard and went through so much on and off the track. This kid is amazing and
he has to be one of the most consistant elite sprinters on the planet right now. My only fear is that he might
have peaked too soon. Hope he can save some of these moments for the world championships. We have seen
Lemaitre grab such major metals. It would be nice to see Ramil Guliyev get some a world championship medal
of any color to have some hardware to show for his hard work. Congrats Ramil. What a day!

We have Lemaitre and Guliyev in the sub 10, sub 20 club.
But we also have Adam Gemili. So that's 3 guys now.

The next, most likely candidate to join this club would be Bruno Hortelano from Spain, if he can recover from this hand accident of last year.

it's possible to see guliyev in 100M final and 200M final at World championship

it will be complicated to be qualified in 100m final but possible

Guliyev is a very good sprinter in 200M, he can run very fast this summer

I fogot about Gemeli. Good catch bro. To be honest I really wish Valery Borzov was on this list He was
so close over both distances and he is an absolute legend winning double gold medals over 100 and 200
meters at the olympics. One of my favortie sprinters ever. On modern surfaces like on todays
tracks I think he would have done this easily muliple times.


Even though Richard Kilty and Julian Reus are only average at the deuce, I would love to see both of them
join the sub 10 club. The more white sprinters that acheive this feat the better. Would also like to see J Teeters
do it as well as some of the new up and coming guys. Jon Entine must need an enema as he is feeling sick because
of all his stupid lies in that book. I've always said if more of our guys took up track we would have many more
Lemaitre/Guliyev type sprinters!

Interesting that Gemili and Guliyev are from the same part of the world.
Gemili is Iranian background Guliyev is from Azerbijan, which borders Iran.
Coincidence, or could this be an untapped area of white sprinters?

At the Grand Prix of Cheb meet European medalist Ramil Guliyev showed top shape with 20.25 200 m win against -1.2 wind in relatively cold weather (17 degrees)
