The point in this thread that we were having fun with and that was lost was how blacks -- in sports and elsewhere -- are often absurdly over-praised and fawned over by guilt-ridden white liberals and many other whites. If Sowell and Williams are brilliant that's great, but to constantly refer to them as brilliant is racial pandering and, to racially aware whites, at times comical.

Is there any black person in this country that you think has made a contribution worthy of praise?

Rush Limbaugh is always asked why he doesn't give equal time to opposing views. He explains that his show is equal time. In other words the rest of the media relentlessly promotes the views and positions Limbaugh disagrees with. Therefore his entire program is devoted to trumpeting his side of the issues. I feel exactly the same as he does. There are millions of Aragorn clones marching in unison as they loudly play in their brass band of diversity. All I have is a little pocket comb and a piece of wax paper to play my tunes on. If you don't like my little ditties, shove some cotton in your ears.

Usually someone being told to "shove something" is not the usual definition of civility or intelligent conversation...

I don't see it as any more uncivil than diverting what had been a really good thread about athleticism and the over-hyping of blacks into questions about Jaxvid's co-workers and Bart's opinion on various individual blacks.

I will grant you the Jaxvid question was not the best idea I ever had.If I was going to ask it..probably needed to do it in happy hour. I don't see the Bart question as being uncivil at all, He brought up the Thomas Sowell thing and I was just responding to it. There are threads all over this board that get off topic(from time to time) and if that's uncivil, I plead guilty but so should alot of other people at CF. I would also never tell anybody at CF to shove something. I understand your frustration at good threads being derailed and I will try to watch that in the future.

Sowell was brought up as a great example of how whites go to extremes to pander to blacks of accomplishment. It wasn't relevant to Sowell's intelligence or Bart's opinion of Sowell or any other black, so the thread changed abruptly to almost a prosecutorial style.

It's no biggie, I've killed many an active thread in my day with a post that was not a good continuation of the spirit animating it.

Maybe the thread can yet retain its vigor. Many great threads take lots of unexpected twists and turns. Another board I used to post on had a thread called The Incredible Wandering Thread because no one could remember its original topic as it kept going and going, switching from topic to topic. It eventually became legendary enough that no one would let it die, becoming a sort of single-thread Happy Hour.

Come on now Aragorn, cut me some slack will ya? I'm at my wits end. Sparring with you has left me weak, on the verge of despair. I'm ready to throw in the towel.
If I wanted to provoke you, I would have suggested stuffing matzoh balls or bagels in your ears, not fluffy cotton. Think about it! I need some rest.

Who's been provoked? I'm not angry. I don't like bagels, but I do like bacon!

* First man in the professional era to reach six consecutive grand slam finals
* First man to win Wimbledon-U.S. Open double three years in a row
* Beat Bjorn Borg's professional era record of 41 consecutive victories on grass and
extended it to 48 when he captured a fourth Wimbledon title

That's just some of the marks Roger Federer has reached in 2006. He capped off 2006 by winning the Master's cup this weekend, beating Nadal, Roddick and Blake along the way. What a year!! Incredible.Edited by: Quiet Speed

Federer dominated the worlds best players including Nadal,Blake and Roddick to win the Masters, the biggest tournament in Tennis in terms of prize money. The only disapointment to his season was the French open final defeat to Nadal. If Federer wins the French next year, many would put him down as the greatest ever whether he breaks the grand slam record or not.His only obstacle to achieving that feat, and possibly winning a grand slam of all four majors next year is Nadal. On fast courts, like Sampras Federer has too much power and variety for the Nadal's and Blakes of this world but clay is entirely different and Nadal is possibly the greatest clay court player of all time.Nadal's speed and defence on the slow playing sevice mixed with the lefty topspin shots he fires to Federer's backhand really throws him off.I hope Fed finally works out how to play Nadal on clay and win the only major eluding him.
