Garrett Wittles is a sophomore at Florida International, and he currently leads the nation with a 43-game hit streak going into this evening's game against South Alabama.

Wittels extended his nation-best hitting streak to 43 games yesterdaywith a first-inning RBI single for FIU against South Alabama. Wittels is now in sole possession of the fourth-longest streak in NCAA Division I history.

The Division I record is held by Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura, with a 58-game run in 1987. Wichita State's Phil Stephenson (47 in 1981) and Arizona State's Roger Schmuck (45 in 1971) are second and third on that list, the only others ahead of Wittels.

Wittels entered Friday batting .412, getting a hit in every game in which the infielder has had an at-bat for the Golden Panthers.
he would have a 50-game hit streak if he hadn't missed a start in last year's conference tourney.

Wittels is now just one game shy of matching Arizona State's Roger Schmuck for the third-longest streak in Division I history. Schmuck had a 45-game streak in 1971 andwithin 14 games of Robin Ventura's Division I record 58-game hit streak.

Wittels now has a 45-game hitting streak, tying the third-longest in NCAA Division I history. Wittels singled in the fourth inning of FIU's game against South Alabama on Sunday, matching the 45-game streak Roger Schmuck of Arizona State put together in 1971.

Only two others have had longer streaks in Division I play: Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura (58) in 1987 and Wichita State's Phil Stephenson (47) in 1981.
Wittels has a hit in every game in which he's had an at-bat this season.

FIU's next game is Thursday at Florida Atlantic.

That is awesome! Hopefully Garrett will break the record of 58!

I have mixed feelings with this kid going for the record as Robin Ventura was always one of my favorite players (had a run with each NY team).

Garrett Wittels finished the season with a 56-game hitting streak. His team is now out of the NCAA tournament.

He'll have a chance to break the record at the beginning of next season because he was not eligible for the draft as a sophomore.

Well, I suppose anyone else watching the Independence Bowl just saw the report about Wittels (and two friends) being charged with rape in the Bahamas. Is this another "Duke Lacrosse" setup? Is Wittels an idiot?
I suspect his baseball career is over after this, even if he's innocent.

anything is possible, of course (except a White cornerback in the NFL, i mean. that would be ridiculous!), but the more i see about this story the more unlikely it seems.

i certainlydon't want to jump the gun. but if the story as has been reported is true, it is a very, very bizarre scenario. hopefully, it will emerge that this is a false accusation. of course, two females falsely accusing three young men of rape isn't exactly a good thing either. i mean, what the crapgoes through people's heads?!?

Here's a link to a pro-Wittels article from The Spearhead, a website that supports men's rights. It gives a good description of the phoney charges he is facing from the false rape accusers. The main reason I link it is to give the email address of the FSI athletic director who went way out on a limb to let Wittels play in the face of the typical harpie-feminsit-PC criticism against it. I think it would be nice if he got some attaboys from CF'ers for standing up for the rule of law.
