This kid needs a thread.

Saturday against Temple, Gilbert threw for a school-record 538 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 97 yards and two TDs, leading SMU to a 21-point comeback.

He was just three yards shy of becoming only the second player in NCAA history with 500 yards passing and 100 yards rushing.

This guy is the Mustang football team. His play has led them from way behind late in games against Rutgers and Temple to draw even (in the case of Rutgers) and to beat Temple.

Gilbert has impressed me the last 2 years yet he has barely been mentioned as one of the nations elite QBs. I think he'll have a shot as a late round pick in the NFL. ANother one of our severely discriminated against athletes!

the dwfs will scream "SYSTEM QB BLAH BLAH COLT BRENNAN BLAH BLAH NOODLE ARM".

The run n shoot gets lumped right in there with the airraid. They look similar when watching but from my understanding the run n shoot has a ton of more option routes for the wideouts based on the coverage the d is in, so if the qb an the wr aren't on the same page it can look terrible, I think this would give Gilbert an advantage at the next level.

Hopefully Case Keenum will start improving his qb play to shut up everyone who puts down any White qb propsect that puts up big numbers, since Keenum had some insane passing numbers in college. Just because quarterbacks are in pass friendly systems doesn't mean they lack the skillset to play qb at the next level. Drew Brees is the perfect example of this, he was in one of the first versions of the spread offense. He pretty much is in one now (most NFL teams run many spread concepts now but some how Whites can't "translate" to the next level) but did well in San Diego with a more traditional pro style offense.

dwid you've summed it up perfectly. I'll be rooting for SMU to string together a few more wins this year. They have some winnable games against Cincy,UConn, USF, Houston, and UCF if Gilbert can keep tearing it up.

Gilbert,Sean Mannion, Bryce Petty,Derek Carr, and B.J. Denker should be more talked about and the NFL will likely ignore them by choosing instead to listen to Kiper and Mcshay and their 21st century PC approved black quarterbacks.. The good thing is Logan Thomas only shot will be at TE by the time Freeman is done stinking it up this weekend.

Gilbert hasn't thrown an interception (at leas not by my reckoning) in the last three games or more. Incredible efficiency (as the NFL pricks term it).

SMU also features Zach Line's little brother Prescott in the backfield.
