[h=1]Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse comment on much anticipated clash[/h]It was officially announced today that WBC/WBA super lightweight world champion Danny “Swift†Garcia (26-0, 20 KOs) and WBC interim super lightweight world champion Lucas “The Machine†Matthysse (34-2, 32 KOs) will meet in a decisive bout which will anchor the undercard of “THE ONE: Mayweather vs. Canelo†on September 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Here are quotes from both fighters:
Danny Garcia: This is the fight I wanted and the fight that I asked for. That is why I’m so happy this fight has been made and will be a part of this huge event. I’m more confident than ever in my abilities and I’m going to show it on September 14. Matthysse is a good fighter and has a big punch, but I’m a talented fighter with what it takes to be a champion and stay that way. This is an opportunity for the world to see what I can really do in the ring.
Lucas Matthysse: I’m glad I finally get a chance to fight Danny Garcia. This is the fight that the entire boxing world (especially my country Argentina) and I wanted. I want to thank my promoters Golden Boy Promotions and Mario Arano for making this fight possible. On September 14, I will show the world that I am the best 140 pound fighter on the planet.

This will be a very competitive fight for the 1st 6 rounds. I believe Lucas will begin to nail Danny with huge shots thereafter. After about 2 rounds of sustaining these shots, Danny will succumb to them. A KO or TKO in round 8 or 9. Lucas will become the undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion of the world come 9-14-2013.

Happy to see this fight made and I'm looking forward to it. Maybe you guys will remember a while back, I made a thread called "Boxers You Just Can't Stand" and I mentioned Danny Garcia as someone that I can't stand! His persona is like wiggered out, he always enters the ring with disgusting rap music, he's promoted by Negro Al Haymon, and he just behaves like an out and out jackass in and out of the ring.

I'll be honest. I don't think this fight will last long. Garcia has looked great in the past (KO win over Khan for example), but his recent fight with Judah he looked absolutely horrible. Garcia's chin seemed shaky at times and against a *relatively* lighter hitter like Judah that doesn't bode well.

Matthysse is one of the biggest punchers in the sport, and has the speed to catch up to even slick fighter and KO them (see his last fight VS Peterson). Matthysse is also a very likable, humble, and patriotic guy outside the ring.

Matthysse's power + Garcia's shaky chin = Prediction: Matthyse KO 1 :)

Im predicting a big KO for Matthysse as well. One thing I noticed about Matthysse is he waited a couple rounds to time Peterson and then unloaded on him. This is a good thing, as it shows his ability to adapt to different fighters. Garcia does most things decent but doesn't stand out in any area in my opinion. He is gonna taste the canvas in this one I think.

I agree with you posters here. Matthyse will win. Garcia is a marked man. The trumpets are already playing for him. But he will survive the first three rounds. After Matthyse warms his hands and arms up, and is ready to fire at his will, Garcia will crumple under the pounding. Garcia doesn't have enough slip or quick enough legs to avoid Lucas' guns, and if he tries to fight back he'll only die harder by counter-fire. Garcia's father stops this fight after four rounds. Matthyse wins by TKO.

After this fight the 140 lb division will empty out. Other than the Easterners, every other fighter will leave the division. At some point Matthyse will be forced to fight at welterweight (147) to get a big money fight.

This fight is very near. In 48 hours the guns of Matthysse will start to fire. Those guns will be heard by the crowd, felt by Garcia, but not seen by Garcia. By now Danny is so nervous. Danny's father is more nervous. And Danny he cannot sleep. For the guns of Matthysse are in his dreams. Angel, Danny's father is giving his son a warm bath so that Danny may get some rest. Why now rest Danny? You will sleep well by about the lucky round. Sad, so sad Danny, but boy, what money you will have for to give to your family back home! Think only of the pride Danny. Or the family. And please forgive Matthysse for his brutality.

What kind of name is Matthysse?

Hey WW, I did a brief cursory search of Matthysse's name on the internet. It appears the origin Matthys was popular in the Netherlands, Portugal and Holland during the 1700s. The name later evolved into Matthysse during the later part of the 19th century. Cool name regardless.

Man, looking forward to the card tomorrow. Lucas should blast out a capable Garcia by round 7 or 8. Hoping that Canelo follows my game plan posted on the Mayweather vs Alvarez thread and hang the long awaited loss on Gayweather.

...

I think it's a Dutch name, a variation of Mathias.

Surprise outcome! Matthysse suffered an eye injury in the 6th round (i think?) and fought half the fight with 1 eye! Mattysse "lost" a close unanimous decision to the dirty Puerto Rican Garcia who thumbed, low-blowed, and held for most of the fight. Even the ref helped Garcia out by judging a late round slip in the ropes as a knockdown.

The Garcia's may think this is some kind of brilliant performance, and I'm sure many will agree with them. but squeaking out a close decision against a one eyed fighter, with help from the referee, is not much of an accomplishment. I'd like to see a rematch. An uninjured Matthysse should tee off on Garcia to a mid to late round TKO.
