It's a clay court tournament, all the American male tennis players usually suck at that. I like Blake personally but I think he is never going to be anything more than a good player who occasionally may make a run at the semifinals of a slam but probably nothing more than that.

I wonder if American tennis has ever been this weak before, among both women but especially men. Most likely not. Iwas watching a French Open match briefly the other night and Martina Navratilova noted that 6 of the top 14 female players are Russian. The male announcer responded by castigating Maria Sharipova for not giving up her Russian citizenship for U.S. citizenship.

Yeah, that's the way to solve the problem. The drunk white fans listening must have been proud of him.

Don, it was only a few months ago that you were confidently telling me I was wrong about this stuff, and that tennis is as popular as ever with american athletes.

It absolutely is not. American athletes rarely go into tennis now.

I'm a sports professional. I see this stuff everyday. Most NCAA tennis programs are either getting cut, or are filled 50% with foreign players.

And I still disagree with you. (And I also never wrote that tennis is as popular as ever with American athletes; check the Australian Open thread.) To convince me you'll have to cite statistics that show that tennis is vastly more popular in Russia and other European countries than it is in the U.S. I don't believe that to be the case. Tennis remains a popular sport here, not as popular as it was in the heyday of Connors, McEnroe, Borg and Evert, but still a niche sport which millions of Americans play, including those with pro aspirations. The existence of the Tennis Network, and the coverage that major tennis tournaments continue to receive, testifies that tennis has lots of fans.

Secondly, even if on average tennis is more popular in European countries, our population, i.e., potential pool of athletes, is far higher than all of them except Russia. Again, it would have to be wildly more popular to account for the discrepancy, and even then only if popularity alone equates to topnotch pros with no other factors involved.

I'm not sure what you mean by "American athletes rarely go into tennis." What are the numbers now as compared to 20 years ago? And even if the numbers are smaller, does that alone account for the fact that virtually none of them are becoming successful? Are there a substantially higher number of Spaniards and Serbs "going into tennis" than Americans?

What sports are white Americans pursuing and having dominant international success in these days? Other than swimming. . . It seems to me the decline of the white American tennis player is part of a pattern, namely a decline of the white American athlete in most sports these days, which is part of the greater agenda of beating whites down psychologically to accept second class status and marginalization in U.S. society.Edited by: Don Wassall

I don't see why we have to root against James Blake other than for the fact that the media over hypes him "just a little". Still it isn't much of a problem. Blake isn't covered any more than Andy Roddick is. That my friends would clearly indicate a problem as Roddick has had more success in his career than Blake and is younger than Blake.

But Blake is a well spoken guy who has tons of respect for tennis and Roger Federer. Blake was quoted as saying:

"Roger Federer is the greatest athlete I have ever seen play."

Reporter responded:
"You mean tennis player?"

Blake responded:
"No IMO athlete, not tennis player!"

I don't see the cultural Marxist threat causing the extinction of whites in tennis. In tennis the best players will win as it is an individual event, not a team one. Coaches, college recruiters, the drunken fans and the media can't do nearly the damage to white athletes in tennis as in football and basketball. Anyway, it's time for me to get to bed...I have work at 9 AM tomorrow. I never can sleep much at night with my mood swings. I usually end up taking a nap after work.

I agree with you on Blake. He obviously still remembers he's half-white and appreciates that part of his heritage. Most of his friends in his J-Block club at the US Open that wildly cheers for him are white and he obviously spends most of his time with white people. I still tend to root against him for caste reasons but I am happy for him personally when he has success.

Nadal and Djokovic in one semi. What a match that should be.

Federer and Monfils (wtf?) in the other.

Federer and nadal again.

Hopefully Fed gets it done this year.Edited by: Poacher

How in the world does Roger game plan for Nadal who looks superhuman on the red dirt right now? One thing I know, do not get involved in long rallies being stuck behind the baseline, unless you enjoy being shredded in a grinder. Getting aggressive too soon in the point on clay can be disastrous, but that may be what it takes. Anyway I hope his serve is cookin and he can take some opportunities on Nadal's second serve. Maybe his new coach can offer some words of wisdom. I'm pulling for Roger big time. I'm getting a little sense that the media would be relieved if his time was nearing the end.

Rooting for Federer but he's definitely the underdog going up against Nadal. What a pitbull on clay Nadal is. He's got the biggest biceps and calves I have ever seen on a tennis player and it doesn't seem to affect his swing or mobility one bit.

Not looking good for Fed. He can't hit a back hand to save his life. It doesn't help that Nadal doesn't seem to make any mistakes. Fed is doing good just to hold his serve.

6-1, 6-3, 6-0(!) What a drubbing.

Nadal is only 22. If he stumps Fed at Wimbledon what then?

Very disappointing. The jockey for Big Brown said on Saturday "I had no horse". Roger can relate, his game was on vacation except for a few games early in the second set.

Nadal is in the groove and playing masterful. He has to switch surfaces now, it remains to be seen if he can do that as well as Borg did. Nice sportsmanship on his part at the end of the match. From an article

As Nadal finished his inconceivable 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Federer in the French Open men's final, the champion did not crumple joyously to the ground. He did not roll around in the clay as he had upon his three previous titles.

He merely raised his arms briefly, then jogged to the net for the handshake, perfectly aware of the warped disfigurement he had brought upon Federer's game.

"Today it was tough for Roger, I think, and I have to be respectful with one very good guy," Nadal said. "I have very good relationship with him, no? . . . . I mean, given the way things occurred and given the relationship I have to Roger, I just didn't want to celebrate too much."

Nadal is a class act. Let's see what happens at Wimbledon if they meet up.
