Caste Idiot/Guru Brian Baldinger said on NFL Network show Playbook that Finneran never should have gotten behind Patriots defense running a 4.8

Is it now a prerequisite to be a complete Idiot if you are white and an announcer on NFL Network?

Sometimes I wonder if these idiots have the same consciousness as I do?The more I watch the white wide receivers that fight through the Caste System to play in the NFL, I begin to think they have better hands, quicker and are more athletic than there black counterparts.

Think about these incredible athletes...Aren't Jurevicius, Curtis, Stokley the best big Receiver with agility/speed, quickest/fastest, and best after catch, respectively, in the NFL today?

I did not even mention Drew Bennett, Rookie Matt Jones, Tim Dwight or the most athletic Tight End in the league-Jeremy Shockey!!!!

4.8? Where did he get 4.8 from? I sometimes think that the speed of
some white players is downplayed on purpose, a la Steve Largent, in the
hopes of making defenses not take them so seriously. It isn't likely, but
not outside the realm of possibility.

The way football players are timed in the 40 is all bunk anyway. Most of
the players out there, and I mean the "fastest" (never mind everyone else),
would have trouble running a legit 4.6 or 4.7 if they were timed on a
track in proper fashion.

Colonel is right. The 40 yd time is the most overrated measure in football. I posted a thread a few months ago about my experiences in college running timed 40's and how we "cheated" to lower our times.

Some colleges use 'flying 40's' that is, the players are given a 5 yard start on the laser.


Think about it this way. The world 60m time is 6.4 seconds, run by guys that run 9.8 second hundreds, indicating that the first half of the 100m, race is well and truely the slowest. Even though 40 yards is only like 36 meters, any time under 4.4 seconds should be treated with a grain of salt.

Ben Johnson, who was known for his explosiveness out of the blocks, broke the 100m dash record about 10 years ago with a 9.83.On thatrecord setting run he was clocked at 40 yards at 4.2.

That sounds about right. I don't think its possible to get below 4.2, and probably not below a legit 4.25 in football. All I can say, is if Brian Finneran runs a 4.8, then I'll be John Brown!

4.3 is as fast as you can go in football. only the fastest sprinters in the world can go 4.2

anybody under 5.0 is fast compared to a normal person.

only believe electronic times. forget hand times. they mean nothing.

I guess I'm pretty fast then. I ran a 4.95 in 10'th grade, and I was a lineman!

You are right though, there probably aren't any guys under 4.3 in the NFL when timed electronically.

I ran across this website that breaks down the 10 meter split times of some of the fastest 100m races in history.

The fastest time at the 40m (44 yd) split is Maurice Greene in the 1997 World Championship at 4.55 sec (he set the 100m WR in this race). If you calculate the time for 40 yd, that would be 4.13 sec. Most of the times listed for various races would put the elite 100m sprinters in the 4.25 to 4.35 sec range for 40 yds. When you consider that these guys are running on a rubber track, with track spikes, and with starting blocks, it really makes you doubt some of the 40 yd times that you hear about from football players.

Tim Dwight definitely ran a sub-4.3 forty. Bo Jackson ran a wind aided 4.12(hand timed). Finneran does not run a 4.8. Shockey runs a 4.4-4.5.

On an unrelated note, Col. Reb, who is John Brown? The guy that killed all those people at that armory(Harper's Ferry)? Just wondering 'cause its a common name.

Question:

Are the players wearing full pads and running on grass/turf when they run the 40 at the combines?

If not, it seems like a meaningless stat. There are some guys who move better with bulky pads (and on a soft surface) than others. That is why you can't just take a sprinter and turn him into a football player (i.e. bust Renaldo Nehemiah).

Is this ever taken into account?

IceSpeed2, yes that is the guy I was referring to. The phrase, "I'll be John Brown" has been around since the 1850's, but you don't hear it much anymore. I thought most everyone on this site would know who I'm talking about and that it is a figure of speech, ala I'll be a monkey's uncle, I'll be Bill Clinton, etc. I don't mind explaining it though, because a lot of younger people have never heard of him.
