I don't usually cruise the baseball topics, so if this one has been covered, let me know.

Do you guys know who is the hardest pitcher of all time, i.e., threw the fastest fast ball?

Steve DalkowskiEdited by: Bear-Arms

Walter "Big Train" Johnson once threw a fastball through a brick wall! The Army used a primative version of it's new RADAR device to try and time Johnson at one time but Johnson was so fast that the device disintagrated into ashes on his first throw. During WWII Johnson volunteered for the Navy and they used him to bring down Jap kamakazi's by throwing grenades at them.

Dalkowski is often credited with being the fastest, though I don't think he ever pitched in a regular season major league game.

Some others -- Bob Feller, Nolan Ryan, Ryne Duren, Sandy Koufax, Sam McDowell, Randy Johnson, Rob Dibble, Bobby Jenks, Brad Lidge.

That's right, Nolan Ryan holds the Guinness World Record for fastest pitch in the major leagues. Heard it on television some years ago.

billy wagner would be up there i think..he used to regularly hit 100 if i remember correctly

Yeah Dalkowski was a minor league pitcher with no control. He bounced around like 8 organizations when there were only 16 teams and a number of independents. It is rumored the Nuke LaLoosh character in Bull Durham is based off of him.

Goose Gossage and Billy Koch were hard throwers I recall.

Bob Prince was a very colorful broadcaster for the Pittsburgh, Pirates for many years. When a pitcher could throw at a interesting velocity,he used to say,"that man could throw a strawberry through a locomotive"!

Was that the same guy who in 1989 said that if the Phillies came back from a 10 run defcit he would walk across from Philaldelphia to Pittsburgh? And wound up doing so for charity. They showed that game on charity a few years ago. They don't show many baseball games on Classic any more, must have too many white guys.
