ESPN’s Bill Simmons: Quarterback Crisis!

Good comment to the Schrager article:

Everyone is overlooking one of the most important facts: the offensive lineman of todays game versus the offensive lineman in the past. The size and techniques of the offensife has changed. In the past lineman were athletic and less then three hundred pounds. Todays offensive line have a difficult time with pass blocking because they lack the foot quickness needed to get into the proper positions and angles for effective pass protection. Todays line consists of huge overweight men that can't use their feet, They rely on their arms to hold their blocks. If you look at the best offensive line today they are the quick strong players that can move. To many quaterbacks are being sacked and hammered every week because they lack protection. Most of the offensive linemen would be better servered in losing about fifty pounds but todays coaches think bigger is better. And that brings us to another reason the quaterbacks of the past seem better. They had coaches that were innovative and actually designed game plans instead of the coaches of today that do the same thing week after week.

highschoolcoach,

Exactly right. Also, it's my opinion that these men, both offensive linemen and interior defensive linemen aren't in condition to play a full game. If an offensive coach gets his opponents running and the offense can keep the ball, it won't take long before the legs will go on these overwweight men. You can see them gasping for breath on the sidelines.

The truth about poor line play on both sides of the ball is obvious to those who aren't instantly rendered mindless by the oft-repeated mantra that "today's players are bigger, faster and more athletic than ever." Bigger yes, but not faster or more athletic.

The NFL is a "copycat" league -- except when it comes to copying things that are being done well mostly by whites, such as how well lighter, more athletic o-lines are doing than sumo-dominated lines; and how well-conditioned, athletic white d-linemen are dominating (to the extent they're being allowed to play). Most NFL coaches seem incapable of doing anything that doesn't pay tribute to the league's contrived black domination. If they were in the NHL, most white football coaches would be starting 600 pound black goalies, with the media constantly marveling about how "quick and athletic" they are.

It's a sad fact that all modern comedians, including the wannabes that work at ESPN, love to use Adam Sandler-like sophomoric "humor" to blast "retards" and other less than mentally or physically perfect members of society. Certainly they enjoy poking fun at fat people in general. Considering this, it is very curious that not a single one of these would-be Henny Youngmans has ever been prompted to issue a snide or sarcastic comment about the jiggling fat on and absurd physical condition of most of today's NFL linemen. As we all know, this is because almost all those blubbery "athletes" are black. If there was a free and honest press in this country, true sports journalists would be lamenting the linemen crisis in the NFL, and would be warning about the health dangers to those obese players who masquerade as "athletes." Even the most non-athletic PBA bowler or PGA golfer is in better shape than the average rotund NFL lineman.
