End of the Line for Favre?

Brett Favre has an injured shoulder and apparently the living legend didn't impress his virtually all black teammates either this season. Thomas Jones said Favre should have been pulled from last week's game, then backtracked a little bit:

Then there was the obligatory anonymous (black) teammate who said there was a "lot of resentment" toward Favre on the team. The absurdly named Laveranues Coles was openly hostile toward Favre from the time he joined the team. Apparently great white players aren't venerated the way older black ones are.

The Jets went from 4 wins last year to 9 this year. But theteam collapsed at the end of the season, the locker room was unhappy, the headcoach was fired and it looks like yet another "rebuilding" of the Jets has begun. Favre ought to retire for good now because next year looks bleak for the Jets no matter who the QB is.

Very few pro football players ever walk away and most have to be shown the gate. Favre is going to have to accept that at some point he will be cut loose and no one will pick him up. He might catch on with a team in 2009, but his playing days will end one way or another. Even though he played well for most of the 2008 season, Favre's overall career would have looked better if he had left after the 2007 season.

After his fling with the Rams in 1977, Joe Namath announced his "retirement." Namath did so because he would have been cut anyway, and no team would have picked him up. Brett Favre is going to reach this point whether he likes it or not.

I think if Favre wants to play, he'll get a shot somewhere, but he may have to accept a role as a backup.

There is a reason the Packers let him go - and leading the league in INT's again this season is one of them. If I'm not mistaken, he threw 22 TD and 22 INT this season. In the final stretch he threw 2 TD v 9 INT, I believe, in the last five games of the season.

If he wasn't already a future HOF quarterback, he probably would have been benched during that span.

Favre quietly retired. The Jets improved markedly in '08 but Favre took a lot of grief fromsome of his black"teammates," both publicly and anonymously. He deserved better. He's not the most popular player on this board, but he owns the record book (until Peyton Manning rewrites it in a few years) and his durability was amazing.

This will be it. It would be insane for him to continue given his age and health. There is no doubt though he will be one of the few whites of his generation to make the HOF.

There has been speculation that although Favre retired for a second consecutive offseason in February, he might return to play for the Vikings.


"We haven't [talked about Favre]," Childress said."It doesn't mean we won't. We talk about everything from what's going on in the United States on the front page today. ...We talk about everything. So, yeah, I'm sure we'll talk about that."


The Vikings are currently planning to go to training camp with Tarvaris Jackson andSage Rosenfels battling for the top spot but Favre wanted to play for the Vikings last season and the only reason that likely didn't happen was because the Packers refused to grant him his release. Favre was eventually traded to the Jets. Childress has known Favre since he visited the Packers on a semi-regular basis while serving as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin.


Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, a former Badgers quarterback who served as Favre's position coach for a period in Green Bay, also remains good friends with Favre. Childress said he and his staff have been so busy to this point that Favre simply hasn't come up.


"I think the thing there is we've had our heads down so hard here on the draft and then after the draft signing free agents and after that getting ready for this minicamp," Childress said."I go through the waiver wire every night. [But] we haven't really even had a chance to even talk aboutthat. Our focus has been on the guys we sign and getting ready for this and then just finishing up the draft stuff."


Childress did not say when was the last time he talked to Favre. "Like I said, I haven't had time to do much," hesaid, "aside fromreeling in this draft and then we've had staff clinics this week from 8 to noon every day and then get back and putting this minicamp together. ... And then see our guys that are in the building. I'm more focused on the guys that are here, participate in the offseason program. I'm more focused on our three quarterbacks right now. Tarvaris and Sage and J.D. [Booty that are progressing through thisprogram and our offseason program."

I would love to see Favre come back this year and play for the Vikings and take Tavaris job in doing so. Favre is a larger than life persona in The NFL and I would like to see him go out on a better note although his season with the Jets was pretty good considering how bad the Jets were before they got Favre. Plus I would love to see the drama of the Favre Vikings playing the Packers twice next season. That would be priceless.Edited by: guest301
