Drop the Conferences

Every season there will only be 15 other teams any team can face in the Superbowl, it can never be Steelers vs Raiders, Cowboys vs Packers, Patriots vs Cheifs. That needs to change.

Why not have the 8 different divisions, instead of AFC vs NFC? Work out some playoff system and do it that way, this way any of the 32 teams can meet in the biggie. I like it.

I do expect to see Aaron Rodgers and his Green Bay Packers vs Tom Brady and his Buc's in this seasons Superbowl. Oh yeah....can't happen.

Why put anyone back to field a punt last night, that made no sense at all and as we saw there was a problem. With that wind forget fielding punts. Afraid to pass so go field that punt.....huh?

DV, I prefer the current system of AFC and NFC. Perhaps I'm just a traditionalist? This is really the last vestige from the NFL v. AFL days, which many believe was the Golden Era of pro football.

I really didn't get into hockey until the 1990's, but I've read during most of the 1970's (before NHL/WHA merger/expansion), they had 12 teams making the playoffs, seeded 1-12 league wide. That's how you got Cup finals like Boston v. N.Y.R., Boston v. Montreal and Montreal v. N.Y.R., ect. in the '70's. Not sure why they scrapped it, but it seems like a few eastern teams had become far too dominant and the NHL had started to become irrelevant in the other parts (mid-west/west coast) of the U.S. and Canada. Hence the change of format?

The imbalance got worse once the Islanders became dominant in the 1980's, as they basically started beating up on inferior West finalist's and you had some terrible Stanley Cups. Wasn't until Gretzky and crew emerged in Edmonton, that the NHL had a sound contender west of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Not sure I want to see that in the NFL. Plus, if you dissolve the conferences do you re-arrange the divisions, with the Jets, Giants, Bills and Patriots (for example) in the same division?

That would be tough in the NFL if they had to re-do the divisions. While Jets v. Giants my sound great (to cucked DWF's that want to watch all black teams), you'd be dissolving a ton of other rivalries that date back almost 100 years -- like Giants v. Eagles, Giants v. Redskins, ect. Giants v. Cowboys probably dates back to 1960.

The NFL had the same dilemma as the NHL in the 90's when either the 49ers, Giants or Cowboys seemed to play each other in the NFC conference final and that game became the unofficial SB game and the lowly AFC champions were wrestling jobber fodder to the NFC champion. Unlike the NHL ratings didn't tank when these mismatches were scheduled.

I too remember the NHL finals where the Islanders blew out Minnesota and Vancouver, both clubs were I think sub 500 clubs that got hot in the playoffs and ran the table until they ran into the Islander juggernaught.

Like the analogy WIR. Regrettably the AFC "jobbers" were mostly the Buffalo Bills, the team I rooted for hardest in the mid 1990's. Buffalo had great regular seasons, even beating tough NFC opponents in big games. They'd breeze through AFC title games in the cold, then played tough for 2 quarters in Super Bowl's. But just choked big time in the final half of SB's and got blown out 3 out of 4 trips. Oh well?

Personally, I like it the way things are -- AFC/NFC in the NFL. AL/NL, with baseball. I believe Comrade Adam Silver has openly toyed with the idea of getting rid of conferences in the NBA Playoffs (like 3 years ago?), ranking teams from 1-16...but he instead went to expanding the playoffs to 20 teams, with those silly "play in games".

I was actually thinking of the Chargers team who only made it to the SB with a goal line stand and Dennis Gibson deflecting a last second pass and denying the Steelers a trip to the SB and probably getting their heads handed to them by the 49ers.

Those Bills teams had the end result similar to the Chargers but they weren't really Cinderella teams having the midnight gong turning their coach into a pumpkin.

PS the late 80's Broncos teams that got their heads handed to them by the 49ers could be included in this group too.

The current system is the way it is because it's how baseball was in 1901 when the AL champion met the NL champion in the World Series. Football even kept "American" and "National" as their conference names, which are the names of baseball's leagues. All other big 4 North American sports followed that model. Of course, basketball and hockey do east vs. west.

Regardless, I like it the way it is. Brady can play Rogers in the NFC championship game. You play your conference rivals more frequently, so those teams don't need to meet in the super bowl.
