I can't accept the idea that the Rams were the best option Bennett had, simply because they have an underrated white QB who puts up big numbers. That clearly didn't translate into a great opportunity for Kevin Curtis, who only really had a chance to shine while Isaac Bruce was injured (and despite lighting it up with many big plays that Bruce could never make, Curtis went right back to the bench when the "respected" veteran returned to the lineup, so he could watch Bulger throw passes to his black starting WRs). A few years ago, Brandon Stokely was the #3 WR in the best passing offense in the history of the NFL, and it did absolutely nothing for his career. After his great season (which Bennett will almost certainly not match this year), he quickly signed back on with the Colts instead of seeking a starting job elsewhere. After giving him good money, the Colts basically wrote him out of the offense the next season, in favor of keeping a nondescript black second TE on the field in his place. Tom Brady does like to spread the ball around, but that may be partially due to the fact his WRs have always been second rate. Bennett would be the most talented wideout Brady has had; I have to think he would recognize that and use him a lot. This is as much about perception as it is about future production on the field. I doubt very seriously if Bennett took the fact that Minnesota may start the atrocious Tavarious Jackson at QB into consideration, while the Rams have a white QB like Bulger, when he decided to sign with them. Clearly, Bennett probably buys into the Caste hype as much as any other white male in America, and if anything would consider it a positive if the team he signed with had a black starting QB. My main point is that Bennett was at least considered a #1 WR with the Titans, the only clear cut white #1 WR in the NFL since perhaps Steve Largent. Now, he starts out with the Rams as a #3 WR. I just think that's a completely ludicrous career move, and tantamount to a working stiff willingly seeking out a demotion. I do think Jaxvid's point about white players being reluctant to move to another team, with the analogy of going from one black high school to another, was superb, but in any case Bennett did in fact choose to move to another team. So, if he was going to switch teams anyway, why choose one where he was effectively demoted on the WR pecking order? I'm happy he's getting paid big money, and if they offered more than any other team, you can't blame him for taking it. Let's hope I'm wrong, and he defies the odds and becomes a smashing success.
