The development of an athlete starts at youth. Young, white High School athletes should play Basketball and run Track to prepare them for football as opposed to playing Baseball and Soccer. High School athletes should play Basketball and run Track instead of Baseball and Soccer because Basketball & Track better develop Speed-Strength (Power), and agility more that Baseball and Soccer.
Basketball is a form of Plyometrics which teaches/trains the muscles to contract more powerfully. Plyometrics training (Bounds, Jumps, Box/Depth Jumps) is considered by Sports Scientists, elite athletes and Strength & Conditioning experts to be the most important and effective method of training to develop power and speed to excel in sports. Science has proven that the best way to improve sprint and jumping ability is through Plyometrics.
Research testing of athletes shows a correlation between jumping and sprinting ability. Athletes who have a high vertical can also sprint fast. So when an athlete develops jumping power by playing Basketball, they also develop the strength & speed components needed for sprinting and developing powerful legs and hips.
Young, white athletes should also try out for the Track teams's sprint events (100m, 200m, 400m). This way they learn how to sprint properly and train for speed. If they can't participate, they should ask the Track coach for a speed training program for sports.
Young athletes who want to play football at the WR, DB's positions should think Track and Basketball which develop power, speed and agility in the legs. Forget Baseball and Soccer--sports that don't prepare you for football competition.
We need to re-program our kids to become better athletes if we are to make in-roads into sports dominance and once again be considered great athletes. Baseball and Soccer is not the way. The formula above is a better plan to create faster, stronger, more powerful and competitive white athletes. The next step to building better athletes is to devise a superior training program that is designed to develop optimal sports power. The objective is to augument the number of white athletes who can win sprint races, and jump as high as those athletes who are considered to be elite.
