RIP white running back. With Hillis going out with an injury, this buried our last hope. Leonard, no hope. Hester, lucky to make an NLF roster. We had our moments, Forsey for on game, Hoover for one game. Alstott for a couple of games, despite the fact Dunn was better.
Looking in the College pipeline, the cupboard is bare. Gebhart, baseball. Sharp, maybe a scat back at best. Mcguffie, to many concussion and he only a Freshman. That type of injuried has derail many of PRO careers. The only one that MAY have potential is Lawson of Ark. St. However I never seen him play.
HS football...please. they will either be LB or S.

RIP white running backs 12/07/08. We were tease in the last 25 yrs, with hope. Riggins..solid. James, what could have been without the knee injury. Then we scamble at the crums of the NFL. Jervey, Hoover, Forsey, Leonard. Alstott, right player wrong team.

I am hoping someone proves me wrong.

Tippycat may not be too far off. It was a miracle that Hillis even got this opportunity. He had to break all kinds of H.S. records just to be recruited as a running back. He had to fight for carries throughout college and suffer conversions to h-back, tight end and fullback. He was made a blocking back in the NFL and only initially got a few carries due to 4 or 5 other backs getting injured. Then, he immediately had to excel to get a full games' worth of carries. One fumble or one bad half would have finished him. How many White NFL running backs been allowed to carry the ball 20 times in a game in the past twenty years? We just saw Halley's Comet.

Yeah, he is. I'm disappointed too, but we can't give up hope. We can't pin out hopes on one player either.

When I read the topic title "Death of the White Runningback" I immediately thought Peyton Hillis (really, "the" white runningback) must have literally died.

I'm glad he's just hurt and maybe he can even come back after this.

I applaud him for carrying the banner for us -- he's a lot better than many runningbacks who get more credit and respect than him.

Best part is, he's a MAN, not a prissy little wuss who thinks the team revolves around him and his assorted little drama.

By this logic then Hillis would have been the only white running back for the rest of history, and our cause would be pretty pointless. While Hillis is an absolute beast, and should have every opportunity anyone else has, if he could accomplish that amazing feat of being a white rb in the NFL, I know that there are others out there that can accomplish this too.

It will take more awareness, and multiple white rbs succeeding at the same time. Every single event that happens has some sort of impact, but is just one more link in the chain of events. It does not definitively determine what happens for the rest of history.

I guess the point is this: How are we any worse off that Hillis played and got injured than had he never played at all?

Dunn is "better" than Alstott because Gruden wouldn't let Mike run it. When Mike did get the ball, always during the garbage time, he did great and the fans loved it. It's not like they gave Alstott a gift, if he could have been playing for a "less-caste" type coach, Alstott could have easily outperformed Dunn.

As for Hillis, it is VERY unfortunate that he is hurt, but all is not lost. Hillis showed the media and fans what we all already know; that whites can play. I don't think even the caste clowns will forget so quickly.

What's ironic is that Hillis was hurt making a catch that perhaps not a single black RB can make. Most wouldn't even have attempted it.

That catch is more evidence that Hillis is the whole package at tailback, but the way DWFs are trained to think, they'll consider it more proof of what a fine receiving fullback he is.

The only way to beat the Caste System is through awareness of enough fans and athletes (and fair-minded coaches). It's going to be a bottom-up process; the NFL and media will never unilaterally change it.

Dunn wasn't the only RB that Mike had to sacrifice carries to. There were the "incredible talents" ofErrict Rhett and Reggie Brooks early in Mike's career.

Alstott beat out Rhett in his first yr. The next yr they drafted Dunn. To the one poster, Dungy was the coach. He misused Mike in the battle Dunn. I always wanted Mike to go to the Steelers and he would have be fine, i.e. Bettis.

Alstott's carries dramatically dropped after Gruden came. He rushed for over 600 yards 4 of the 6 years Dungy was there, not once under Gruden.

You're right he would have been a good fit for the Steelers, but Cowher favors black players, so he probably couldn't have ran much there either.

I agree with Tippycat. Look at what had to happen for Hillis to become a starter; FOUR black RBs lost to injured reserve. That isn't likely to happen again anytime soon.

The Caste System is as strong as ever. Look at Tim Tebow; all I've been hearing, from jock sniffers on t.v. to drunk white fans on fantasy football forums, is that Tebow is "not an NFL QB." Predictably, they all suggest he might make it at "FB or TE." Not RB or WR. I wonder why that is? Can you imagine anyone suggesting that Vince Young-who was basically a less talented, less accomplished Tebow-be moved to FB or TE?

The situation over the past few years proves that only in the kind of ultra rare situation that Hillis found himself in, is a white RB likely to get a chance to be any team's primary ball carrier. Look at the next great white hope in college- McGuffie- benched during his freshman year. Why? Do highly touted black RBs with his skill set get benched as freshmen? Look at the past few years, when productive college backs Brian Leonard and Jacob Hester were actually drafted high by an NFL team. In both cases, almost as if someone was sending orders from somewhere, the exact same thing happened. The teams refused to give a high draft pick a real chance to play. What black draft picks are treated that way?

I've said it before; until one of the few highly respected white ex-players (Mike Ditka, Troy Aikman, Joe Montana) or even better, one of the few active white players whom blacks respect (Tom Brady....okay, he may be the only one), publicly addresses the discrimination faced by their white peers, the situation will not change. It's the giant elephant in the room. It's the emperor wearing no clothes. Sooner or later, some white with a public platform has to have the courage to expose it and demand justice for white players. Great post bigunreal. Black affirmative action in sports, mythologized by the media's one hundred percent backing, has not only brainwashed nearly the entire population into believing white are athletically inferior (I was at the gym today doing a speed and power workout and overheard two middle aged white saying how they were just a couple of white guys trying to box; the self disparagement was sickening), but even those white whoare "allowed"to compete with blacks at the highest level. Why else would white running or corner back with NFL potential not speak out after being screwed? <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Oh, and speaking of thosewhite dudes, one last named Rothschild no less: I was sure to let them know that whites hold the majority of belts and could fight with the best of them. Edited by: Alpha Male

The injury to Hillis is so depressing. We wait so long for a white running back to get some carriers and he gets injured. That however is the price we have to pay for the almost complete lack of white running backs in the NFL. Hillis was starting to shine.

And so the official "cover story" begins- from today's fantasy football website Rotoworld:

Broncos placed RB Peyton Hillis on injured reserve with a torn hamstring, ending his season.

He tore the hammy "a few inches off the bone," Mike Shanahan revealed, and faces eight weeks of recovery. Hillis won't need surgery. Hillis ends his rookie year with 5.0 YPC average on 68 carries, six TDs, and 14 catches. He has a nice outlook as a future utility man, but probably not as a pure tailback. While Hillis will be in the mix for short-yardage carries in a potential 2009 committee for Denver, teams don't usually "feature" backs with limited speed and moves. His long-term ceiling in dynasty leagues is low.

Yes, this is just some geek on the internet writing fluff, but he obviously knows his Caste System. I won't point out the obvious; Hillis, for instance, is faster than Torrain, who I'm sure this rocket scientist loves. I support these ultra rare white RBs/WRs/DBs as much as anyone here, but the bleak situation just leaves very little room for optimism.

Look at the video carefully. It is a gigantic freak accident. If he was as flexible as McGuffie he would have walked away. The collision forced him to stand up very straight on one leg while his whole upper body bent extremely forward towards the ground-- a very extreme touch-the-toes move. Damit.

But to add to a pessimistic bent-- there is no way he will ever play again in any meaningful way. Like several posters mentioned before-- it tood 4 mediocre running backs to get injured before he started as DEFAULT due to no fresh bodies. What does he do with his paltry starts? He lights it up and demonstrates he is a full fledged starter, but nobody cares because he is just thought of as a role player. Friggin Brian Leonard does not even have double digit carries this year.

I think he'll be utilized like an Alstott.

Shanahan is going to think, wow, I can put this great talent on the field with a "real running back." He'll, at the very best, get 7-8 carries a game and catch passes out of the backfield, and it will change very little. Welcome back to Arkansas Peyton.

Wouldn't separating sports from school further encourage black athletes? I have a feeling if the two were separated, that many white atletes would choose to pursue an academic career rather than devoting their lives to sports. And I think black athletes would choose sport over academia.

Am I understanding you guys properly?
