Couture vs. Lesnar

I was curious who ya'll like in the forthcoming match-up of UFC legend Couture vs. physical specimen, the monsterous Brock Lesnar? I'm think Brock by TKO/G&P or Randy by decision. Randy is more experienced, saavy & more rounded, but Brock is bigger, faster, stronger, younger with heavy hands.
 
You gotta think age and inactivity will catch up with Couture eventually. Plus, Couture's strong point is wrestling, wich Brock is also strong at.

I still think a great BJJ/submissions guy will be the hardest test for Brock. But he seems to be learning by leaps and bounds, unlike Kimbo Hype who just kept fighting like a bar bouncer no matter how much instruction he received.
 
I am rooting for Couture and he certainly has a chance but Lesnar is the man and if he stays healthy, he has a chance to dominate the heavyweight division for a decade. Unless of course, if Fedor shows up in the UFC.
 
I have watched ppvs like this in the past in the privacy of my home but this fight is so huge I will be going with some friends to see it at some sports bar with big screen TV's that show the UFC. What a huge fight this is between two white warriors, one a living legend and the other the future of the sport.

I don't mind it so much when two whiteys are fighting each other because that shows the we are being represented and have numbers in the sport. MMA in particular and boxing to a lesser degree is dominated by whites.
 
I don't know who to root for. I'll just be watching a white guy become the greatest fighter in the world. I guess I'll root for Lesnar, he was a bigger caste victim when the Vikings cut him. But...I don't know, Couture pursued Olympic wrestling which I'd like to see more in this country. Hmm?

My opinion exactly. It is as thought the only fighter they can get to challenge the white Couture is the White Lesnar. It shows domination of our people in the sport.
Personally, I am rooting for Lesnar. No ,atter what happens from here on out, Couture will go down without a doubt as one of the greats. Lesnar's story on the other hand has yet to be written.
 
I'm not for either fighter, because I like them both. Randy is one of my all time favorites, and has been since I saw him way back in UFC 13. In UFC 15, I remember how people were amazed when he beat Belfort with strikes.

Lesnar has the possibility of becoming a great fighter.

Regardless of who wins, I want a good fight. I guess from a strictly white athlete point of view, a Lesnar win would be better, as he is on his way up, while Couture can't have that many fights left. Let's hope for a good one

I am not certain Lesnar has the slippery ground skills to stay out of a Couture trap. I have to vote for a Couture submission win as that is what he will probably be trying to do to win as he cannot overpower Lesnar.

To be fair to both these men, I think they are both worthy champions but not in Fedor's league.
 
Randy is very crafty, but isn't known for his KO power or being a submission wiz. I don't think he can control Brock on the mat (early rounds) to launch effective GnP. Brock also has heavy hands. I'm not sure what Randy's plan will be early...perhaps "hit and run" with quick combos then move. I suspect Randy may try to gas Brock out & stretch it to the late rounds. Couture may also try to use the clinch, but best beware of Brock's takedowns early. I think Randy's let his press/fame get to his head/ego. He's gone a little "Hollywood" compared to the old Team Quest days. I'd guess I'll pull for Brock. A KO would help escalate Brock's status. Edited by: DixieDestroyer

I agree with your above statements about how the fight will go. I was watching the hour preview special last night on Spike on this fight and it's just hard for me to figure out how Randy wins this. If he had Frank Mir's submission skills, I could see how. But I think either Brock runs right through him or wears him down and KO's him by stoppage late in the 2nd. I hate to underestimate Captain America and a part of me is rooting for the 45 year old, but another part of me is excited about this explosivly powerful and fast white athlete and would love to see Lesnar dominate this division and be considered the best fighter one day after Fedor moves on.

There are other good fights on this card to be excited about. Josh Hendricks went to High school where I am currently living and he will be fighting Gabriel Gonzaga. I am also looking forward to seeing two of my favorite fighters in action tonight, Nate Quarry and Kenny Florian. Dustin Hazlett is also a fighter with great striking skills who is on the rise and should impress tommorrow night. I will be watching with some friends and having a good time.Edited by: guest301
 
Lesnar killed Couture with the ground and pound. Lesnar completly dominated Couture. However when I saw the weigh in I had to say that Randy looked like he was in horrible shape. Lesnar is going to be a dominateing force in MMA.
Also impressive asalway was Kenny Florian who koed Joe Stevenson in round 1.
 
I don't mind admiting I was wrong. Lesnar is better than I and many others thought. I read an article today comparing him to Kimbo as some kind of media creation because of his time with professional wrestling where apparently "he belongs" according to the newspaper. Well, he's king of UFC at least for now. Randy should have fought Fedor when his stock was high. I don't think anyone wants to see that fight now. I don't think we will see a Fedor/Lesnar fight but if we ever did I would think Fedor would overwhelm Lesnar with punches and then submit him.
 
After Nogeira beats Mir, he will school Lesnar.

Lesnar has no chance against top guys like Fedor,Arlovski,Barnett and Nogeira.

Mir,A.Emelianenko,Sylvia,Werdum and Gonzago would also be very tough opponents.
 
Randy actually did better than I expected. On a couple of occasions he was actually able to pin Lesnar against the cage, and at one point, in an incredible display of back strength, he actually just stood up with Brock draped across his back. In the end, I think he underestimated Brock's size and power. In his interviews (and his wife's) they said things like 'He's no bigger than Sylvia and no stronger than Gonzaga...' Uh... hello!

Of those fighter's listed by itsme, the only one who I definitely see beating Lesnar is Fedor. Nog *should* beat him but really, that depends on how well Lesnar trains to defend subs in the next six months. Mir, Aleks, Sylvia, Werdum, Gonzaga, and particularly, Arlovski, would all get beat down by Lesnar imo. Barnett would give him a good scrap though. I was thinking last night that after Nog, the fighter I'd like to see him fight the most is Barnett.

What's really funny is that there are still people comparing Lesnar to Kimbo.

Shane Carwin can match Brock's power but he can't move as well as Brock and that could be the difference in any fight between these two.

I think Brock would KO Nog. I'm not sure Nog is going to beat Mir either.
 
By the way, we have no reason to hate on Lesnar on this board. The guy is a legitimate NCAA wrestling champion, extremely athletic, and has a great attitude toward training. He only wants to fight the best, no cans. I think it's great that a guy like Brock is the UFC heavyweight champ.

I agree. And I don't see any of those super affletes in the NFL trying their hands at real fighting, once their careers are over with the NFL, either.
 
This fight was really exciting. To be honest I was hoping for Randy to pull it off, not that I dislike Brock in any way. Randy may have lost but he definitely showed why he was the champ. He almost seemed to be bullying Brock at times. In the end it was a great win by Brock against f**kin' tough old man, and I'm looking forward to his fight with Nog.

Ditto, I agree with all of that. I was commenting to a friend as I was watching the fight that Couture was doing great with the Greco-Roman stuff he was doing to Lesnar but that I doubted he could do that for all five rounds without getting caught. Sure enough, about 30 seconds later he gets caught, knocked down and hammer fisted into a stoppage. Couture still has fight in him but Brock is huge. The crowd I watched it with let out a collective gasp at the stare down in the middle of the ring before the fight started. The size difference was so incredible. Maybe the UFC should have a super heavyweight division now, just a thought.Edited by: guest301
