Buzz is this kid is going to be off the charts great. Sports Illustrated even ran a full length article about him. Crosby, Gretzky comparisons abound. BTW the 2014 NHL Draft starts Friday June 29th live on the NHL network.

Since the above post Connor McDavid has improved even more and he will go first in the draft. An American, Jack Eichel, currently at Boston College, is also looking like a potential superstar. So the two players considered the best in a hockey generation will go at the same draft. Last I looked the Sabres or Oilers would be most likely to get first pick.

Buffalo is the worst. 3 points "ahead" of Arizona and 4 in front of Edmonton. If any franchise in hockey needed a young superstar, it would be the Sabres.

They have also bled their team to the bone to "win" the first pick or at least to have a lock on the second pick, but the team keeps on playing with heart for Ted Nolan.

The local radio station 550 WGR has stated that their might be a rift with upper management again with Nolan. If you remember 15+years ago the rift between John Muckler and Nolan cost him his job back then.

It would be so much better for the sport if he went to a big market team, especially in the US, but given the way the draft works that's not going to happen this year.

My guess is that he goes to the Coyotes. That franchise could use a big star after the last few years of hell that fanbase has been through. On a side note, I'll be attending the draft this year as it will be held in Sunrise FL

I was lying in a hotel room last Friday night watching the Penguins lay an(other) egg against the Islanders when the broadcasting channel informed us that more exciting things were happening elsewhere. Connor McDavid had scored a first period hat-trick and a total of five goals for the Erie Otters against the London Knights. Pretty good stuff:

Looks like the Edmonton Oilers are going to get Connor McDavid. Despite Buffalo having the best chance at first pick the Oilers number came up. I'm guessing that's how they got Gretzky way back in the early 80s. The Sabres will get second pick. Assuming the Oilers take McDavid the Sabres will almost certainly go with Jack Eichel. I'm sure it is a big disappointment for Arizona who get the third pick. A McDavid or Eichel could've done wonders for the struggling franchise.

Gretzky was originally with the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA. He chose to play for the WHA because at the time, you had to be at least 21 to be drafted into the NHL. When the Indianapolis Racers were facing bankruptcy (and initially folded) he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers who were also in the WHA at that time. The Edmonton Oilers were one of four franchises absorbed into the NHL during the NHL/WHA merger.

It will be interesting to see how the media handles this blossoming superstar who at this point might have the most potential of any athlete on the planet. Warp speed and crazy good we may have to hang our hats on guys like him. He might be the greatest athlete alive but only time will tell. The NHL draft featured several speedsters taken in the first round:Jack Eichel another budding superstar, Mitch Marner,Zach Senyshyn, Matt Barzal and Travis Konecny to name a few.

Yeah, I'm excited about McDavid & Eichel. But that said, I hate the heavy hype put on guys before they've accomplished anything in the big leagues. I thought it was ridiculous, all the endorsements R.G.Knee caught before he ever completed a pass in the NFL.
Playing at the highest level is always psychologically different, gotta give 'em a couple years before their coronation as the next Gretzky, Montana, etc. At least in hockey, they'll be somewhat less in the DWF, societal meat grinder at large.

I've watched McDavid play. He's a slick, attacking, puck carrying and deking forward with good short range vision. Sorry, he'll never be a Wayne or Mario but more like a Sydney. I watched hundreds of games Wayne played in and he saw everything, everyone, and could predict the future; we use to say he made everyone else on the team better because of his passing. McDavid will be star though no doubt.
