The leader of Paterno's stingy defense, linebacker Paul Posluszny, won the Chuck Bednarik Trophy, given to the best defensive player in the country. The other finalists were Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk and Maryland linebackers D'Qwell Jackson.
Posluszny ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 111 tackles and an average of 10.1 tackles per game. He has recorded 11 tackles for a loss and three sacks.
Mike Hass, the NCAA's leader in receiving yards (139.3 per game), beat out Dwayne Jarrett of Southern California and Jeff Samardzija of Notre Dame for the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best wideout.
Minnesota center Greg Eslinger won the Outland Trophy as the country's best lineman, Oregon State's Alexis Serna took the Groza Award as the nation's top kicker. Wake Forest punter Ryan Plackemeier was the Ray Award winner.
Reggie Bush came away with the Walter Camp player of the year award and the Doak Walker Award given to the nation's best running back. As we have oftimes mentioned, when Luke Staley won the Doak Walker Award he was rewarded with a 7th round draft pick, think ol' Reggie will have to wait seven rounds to hear his name called?
Also note Bush's humility after winning the award: "I guess I'm the best running back, at least this year," Have you EVER heard a white player describe himself that way in an acceptance speech???
Gary Barnett finally got booted from Colorado. He is the classic example of how winning can excuse anything for a coach. His program was rocked with scandals involving sex and drugs for recruits, illegal enticements for players and the accusation of rape by a female kicker who played for them a shrt while. All of it was excused as long as he was winning. So after two humiliating losses, a 70-3 loss to Texas last Saturday on top of a 30-3 loss to Nebraska the week before (although they are still going bowling), Barnett got 3 million dollars and his walking papers. Tough life eh?
