College basketball week six 2019-2020

#13 (at the time) Oregon is a team we don’t often mention, but they have an excellent collegiate point guard who is playing VERY high level basketball. Payton Pritchard led the Ducks to a much-needed win over Hawaii, snapping a two-game losing skid. Pritchard went for a double-double in the victory, scoring 20 and dishing out a season-high 11 assists. he’s fun to watch (i wish he was playing for the Zags!).

speaking of Gonzaga(currently #8), their all-White frontline dominated in a win on the road against intrastate rival #22 Washington. The trio of Tillie, Petrusev, and Kispert combined for 47 points and 19 rebounds (and true freshman Drew Timme chipped in 4 and 4 more off the bench), led by Petrusev’s 17&10. Tillie stuffed the entire stat sheet, adding team-highs of 6 assists and 4 steals to go with the aforementioned numbers. dude is gonna make a lot of money playing somewhere.

#5 Virginia bounced back from a blowout loss to knock off #7 North Carolina pretty handily. CF favorite Jay Huff had a tough night, but freshman center Francisco Caffaro picked up the slack quite nicely, notching 10 points (on 4-5 shooting), 7 boards, and 1 block in 21 minutes off the bench. he also had a really sweet alley-oop dunk. Stattmann had his usual solid but unspectacular outing, playing tough defense and knocking down a few big shots.

tonight tough-but-depleted Iowa plays again. hopefully they can recover quickly from their hard-fought loss to #4 Michigan.

Iowa is looking really good up by double digits in the 2nd half. Joe Wieskamp has 21 pts so far. This is one of the best teams to watch in college basketball.

Iowa absolutely blitzed nearly-all-affletic Minnesota by 20 tonight, despite having almost no help off the bench. Weiskamp finally woke up, going for 23 (8-15 shooting and 5-7 from 3) and 6, as well as swatting 2 shots and getting 2 assists. Garza continues to play like an All-American, notching another double-double (21 and 10) as well as blocking a shot, getting a steal, and dishing 2 assists. Fredrick is returning to speed, finishing as the only other Whitehawk in double figures (10 points on 4-7 shooting). McCaffrey had a solid outing. and while Bohannon surprisingly went scoreless on the night, he finished with 10 assists and ZERO turnovers. wow!

off the bench, the only productive player was Kreiner, who had 6 points and 5 boards.

defensively, Iowa put an absolute lockdown on the Brown Gophers’ starting backcourt, holding the dynamic afroletes to a combined 3-29. that kind of defense will win you a LOT of ball games.

Iowa is certainly a team to be proud of.

Iowa, even with all their injuries, still starts five White athletes, and has five “blue collar gym rat overachievers” on the court for nearly the whole contest.

tonight, all five starters scored in double digits, and lone primary bench player Kriener had 8. five of the six (not Bohannon) shot 50% or better from the floor. it was a terrific team effort, but the Whitehawks were once again led by the All-American efforts of Luka Garza. the big man played even bigger, finishing with 21 points (9 of 16 shooting), 11 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot. he is the focal point of their offense and opposing defenses, and so far this year he’s been strong enough to carry that load.

it was fun to watch them dominate tonight.

He's a 6'6 Forward with great ball handling skills and obviously can score the ball. Was named Wisconsin Mr Basketball in 2018. Badgers should be kicking themselves for letting this guy slip away. Especially with this year's weak squad, Domask would be a welcomed addition.

Spot on summary JC. I think his draft stock will definitely correlate with how well/far Iowa can make it in March. Ive been impressed with him since he was a Freshman and he's been dominant now as a JR. Averaging 20 and 10, awesome to see.

The part I highlighted reminds me of Thon Maker. Perfect example of an athletic, tall, long guy that has no clue what to do on the basketball court. Whether people admit it or not, skill can beat athleticism!

Even though I'm a Nico Mannion fan I will be rooting for Gonzaga. They are just as good and year by year and over the decades far more tair than most college teams to our guys.

In the other game I would prefer to see Michigan win but I hope Pritchard has a monster game as just like Mannion, we need more white point guards in the nba. He has a legitmate
chance to be drafted in the later rounds someday if he continues to play at such a high level. Love watching Pritchard play.

I just got done watching Georgetown vs Syracuse. Glad to see Georgetown get their 3rd straight win but I really love watching Syracuse play. This team is full of very talented white players. The son of the coach Buddy Boeheim put on a show scoring 25 pts in the 2nd half after getting shutout in the 1st half. He is so fun to watch. Then you have Joe Girard III the all time leading scorer in NY High School Basketball History scoring 16 pts. The 3rd starter is Marek Dolezaj of Slovakia who scored 13 pts with 9 rebounds and 4 assists. I think I have found one of my new favorite teams to add to the watch list.

As for my favorite player Matt McClung. He lead all scorers with 26 pts and added 4 rebounds & 2 assists! McClung had 21 pts in the 1st half but was very unselfish in the 2nd half. He is a true leader. The center Omer Yurtseven had another fine game wih 19 pts, 9 rebounds and 1 assist. This is a very unselfish Georgetown team and now that the ball hog Akinjo is gone we could very well see them make the tournament. Back to McClung. He could have easily scored 30 to 40 pts but was so unselfish. He is really maturing and growing as a player in every way. The kid can create any shot he wants off the dribble. Matt is also a very good shooter and shoots 94% from the free thow line. The NBA will be drooling over this kid in the near future. Mark my words!

#18 Butler, currently 10-1, destroyed historically-all-black Southern today, 66-41. before the Butler starters sat down early in the second half and took the rest of the afternoon off, the two white Bulldog starters were the two leading scorers in the game. Butler has traditionally been a pretty White friendly program, and this year they have two “gym rats” entrenched in the starting lineup.

in today’s game, powerful sophomore power forward Bryce Golden had a team-high 13 points (4-5 shooting), while senior wing Sean McDermott added 11. Golden is a rugged, broad shouldered low post player with some skill, and he plays bigger than his 6-foot-9 height would indicate. McDermott is a long-armed athlete and a competent scorer, but he’s never emerged as a dominant player.

Butler wins with ball movement and balance on offense, and they play VERY disciplined team defense. they aren’t big, but they’re tough, and they don’t make many mistakes. they’re a tough out.

Kudos to Jimmy Chitwood, White Lightening and Bucky for keeping us informed in college basketball this season. Caught a few games today. Michigan's rangy Frantz Wagner probably had his best game so far scoring 21 points and 4-7 from three in a close loss to Oregon. As he adjusts to the American game he needs some seasoning and refinement but the raw material is there and if he develops like I think he should he looks to be an NBA prospect down the road.

The Syracuse- Georgetown game was a time machine thing. Old Big East rivals hooking up as Coach Boeheim faced off against Patrick Ewing a player he used to coach against.

Pat Ewing is actually a nice man. On the shy side he is very close friends with Larry Bird.

A very unusual thing. Georgetown lost four players recently and are depleted. But the announcers hinted that Mac McClung is looking like the leader of the team. A fun player to watch.

Tennessee lost a tight one at home against Memphis. Junior PF John Fulkerson had a couple of great blocks. Nice athlete. They even have a lively tall freshman off the bench 6'9" local product Drew Pember.

Notre Dame waxed UCLA at home. Bill Walton and Digger Phelps were there. Still waiting to hear Walton announce a Nico Mannion game. As mentioned above Arizona against Gonzaga in one half hour.

Never fails. I lick my chops anticipating a great show as Gonzaga played at Arizona last night and what happens? Star PG Nico Mannion comes down with the worst case of brick throwing ( finished the night 3-20 and 1-10 from three) and overall the game was a bit of a jagged bore. He did have 10 assists and looks the part but cripes hit a shot or two please.

If versatile PF Killian Tillie can stay healthy ( doubtful as he limped off again last night) Gonzaga is formidable. Cory Kispert did some impressive things last night but for me the best player on the floor was C/PF Filip Petrusev. He bottled up the middle and has great rebounding form establishing proper position and getting off his feet quickly. He had an efficient 16 point 7 rebound night and blocked 4 shots for good measure. NBA talent for sure. I think he will work his way into the first round down the road. I had seen him play in spots but last night I got a full look and came away impressed.

#6 Gonzaga went on the road and won the Pac12 championship last night, knocking off #15 Arizona. the Zags have now left the comfy confines of Spokane and hit the road to beat the 3 best teams the “conference of champions” has to offer: Oregon (neutral site), Washington (at Washington), and now at Arizona, all in the past two-and-a-half weeks.

to give a more complete recap than Shadowlight, Arizona started off the game playing much harder than the Zags, and it really showed on the boards. Zona was held in check on the perimeter by stellar Zag defense, but they hit the glass like maniacs, hauling in 12 offensive rebounds in the first half. that’s simply inexcusable for a frontline as good as Gonzaga’s. as a result of the vast discrepancy in field goal attempts (Zona had 78 shots for the game to Gonzaga’s 61), the Wildcats led for nearly the entire first half despite shooting an abysmal percentage. in fact, Gonzaga’s first lead came with 1:15 left in the first half ... and they never led by more than 1 until after halftime.

Mark Few got the Bulldogs’ attention during the break, however, and it was a different Zag team that showed up in the second half. led by Corey Kispert, the Zags steadied themselves offensively and slowly pulled away, building a 16-point lead with 1:37 left to play. then, the Zags had an almost-complete meltdown.

Zona started fouling to extend the game, and Gonzaga blew nearly their whole lead. they missed myriad free throws, they had several boneheaded turnovers, and they quit playing defense. all told, they led by only 2 with 1.4 seconds left, before hitting a couple of free throws to finally seal the deal.

all in all, the game had a ragged pace and felt very much like an Elite 8/Final 4 type contest. very physical and pressure filled. it was fun to watch.

for the Zags, Kispert had a game-high 18 (7-13 shooting) and a team-high 8 rebounds. he did a terrific job attacking the rim and not settling for jumpers. Petrusev had 16 (6-12 shooting), 7 boards, and 4 blocks. he also drew 8 fouls. Zona’s bigs couldn’t guard him. Tillie tweaked an ankle but still had quality minutes, and Timme played very well off the bench, especially in the first half, scoring 7 points.

for Arizona, Nico Mannion had a terrible shooting night, only hitting his second field goal in the final minute before finishing 3-20 from the field. OUCH! still, he looks to be the most talented point guard in the country to me, and this will undoubtedly be a learning experience for him. to his credit, he never quit playing hard or started whining, and as Shadowlight mentioned he had 10 assists (to 3 turnovers).

speaking of talented West Coast point guards, #10 Oregon’s Payton Pritchard carried the Ducks in their overtime win at #5 Michigan. Pritchard scored 19 of his game-high 23 points (11-19 shooting) after halftime. he’s not highly regarded by the NBA guys, but he’s an excellent collegiate lead guard.

vastly undersized and unranked Wofford (remember them?) went in to Chapel Hill today and knocked off #17 North Carolina, 68-64. oh! and they did it “despite” having 4 blue collar gym rats in their starting 4-guard lineup, two of whom are listed as being only 6-feet tall.

[Wofford knocked off UNC back in 2017 when the Tarheels were ranked #5.]

Wofford didn’t play particularly well, getting absolutely DESTROYED on the boards and not shooting to their averages, but the Terriers took care of the ball (only 5 turnovers as a team for the game), hit 14 threes, and held the Tarheels to 32.6% shooting.

Trevor Stumpe had game-highs with 19 points (6-10 shooting) and 5 assists, while backcourt mates Storm
Murphy added 15 (5-14, but 5-10 from three) and Nate Hoover chipped in with a team-high 6 rebounds.

UNC was without “all everything” freshman Cole Anthony and fellow starter (the ridiculously named) Leaky Black, but they were still massive favorites and had a massive size (and talent?) advantage on their home floor. but none of that mattered, and Wofford slayed the giants once again.
