I’m sure that assessment is right. Scholarships are the kids who get paid to play there, so if you are getting paid, you’re more likely to see work. Why would you play a kid who you didn’t even see fit to give a scholarship to? It’s very circular logic but it does help explain a lot.

Of course, it’s also an easy way for virtue signaling universities to add vibrancy and diversity to their campus. I maintain that first and foremost scholarships are for black kids, and unless that affirmative action program changes, there likely will be very little progress.

Just my .02
This is an underrated component of the caste system. Most universities struggle to find enough black students to meet their quotas. That's why every so often you see these stories about a black kid getting offers from every Ivy League school with test scores that would only be moderately impressive for an Asian, White or Jew. Football scholarships are a great way to add 50-60 blacks, most of whom would not be admitted otherwise. Even small midwestern schools in 90%+ white areas manage to find a handful of blacks to import from somewhere across the country.

This also has the effect of motivating black kids who know they will never get into college without the scholarship. I've known a lot of white kids who probably could've gone D1 but lacked the work ethic because they had tons of options outside of sports.

D1 athletics is nearly a full time job. To commit to that without getting paid for your time is a bad idea as the time spent will likely make your grades suffer anyway.

So if you are a white guy who isn’t absolutely elite you aren’t getting a scholarship.

If you arent getting a scholarship the odds of you bothering to stay with any sport go way down.

It would be interesting to gather stats on number of whites v blacks offered scholarships at different schools and sports over time.

If you then compare by standardized test scores I think we will find out that what we already suspect.

One whites scholarships in d1 football have declined steadily since the early 80s but the average test scores of whites v blacks on scholarship would be large.

It’s just another diversity scheme, which sadly has widespread societal implications

10.7 100m for high school is quite fast, right? I mean it’s not gonna get you to the Olympics but it’s plenty fast

Yes plenty fast. Jordan Addison was a 10.85 and Puka was a 11.01. I think the thing to really consider is not even the guys who make the NFL but think about the countless black athletes who don't pan out in college who are given opportunities. The West Virginia, Purdue etc. should be littered with white skill kids.

I guess Marshall and WVU can’t be bothered to offer the state’s 100m champ a scholarship?

It really is. And neither program is “elite”. They should be scoping up every top in-state player by default and then hitting the recruiting trail as they do have a smaller population pool to select from.

These posts are gold. They highlight good players at verboten positions who rarely have any solid offers. They really are the caste system in a microcosm. Thanks for taking the time to do them.

Cooper Perry a WR from Arizona has committed to Oregon. "He has a lot of shake and wiggle in his game"

Jackson Carpenter WR from Nebraska also committed to Nebraska. Nebraska currently has 4 white kids from Nebraska committed to them. Glad to see Rhule giving them an opportunity. But you can see a small peak into how white kids get screwed with this comment.

"There's been players in the state sometimes in recruiting that ... I'll say, 'Let's watch the film, he's good enough, right? He's a scholarship player?' ... And they'll say, 'Well, he's a 4.' Which means we think he'll be a multiple year starter. And then I'll say, 'Well, then we should offer a scholarship.' And they're like, 'Well, I think we can get him as a walk-on.' Well, if all we do is offer players in the state of Nebraska walk-on opportunities then everyone is going to grow up dreaming of getting a walk-on opportunity.

One would think sub 11 seconds would at least warrant a place like Miami or Ohio or bowling green giving him a deal?

Caleb Hewitt that is
So I did some research. I just picked one of the teams you mentioned and looked at the skill kids they signed in last years recruiting cycle. Bowling Green signed the following affletes.

DB-Kal-El Pascal from Miami. 5'11" 175 ran a 24.32 200M
DB- TJ Nelson from Cincinnati. 6'0" 190 ran a 11.72 100M
WR- Caleb Goodloe from Clearwater Florida. 6'1" 180 ran a 11.49 100M
RB- Nakai Amachree from Haslett Michigan. 5'11" 195 ran a 11.60 100M
DB- D'Kyah Banks from Grayson Georgia. 6'4" 160 ran a 26.35 200M with a 16'4" long jump.
DB- Maurice Hayes from Perry Georgia. 6'0" 170 ran a 10.87 100M

They also signed a couple more but I couldn't find any times on them. These kids may turn out to be fine players but it's so obvious these schools aren't turning over every stone to find the best of the best and no wonder why they are mediocre at best.
