Good article on former Denver Broncos' standout Ed McCaffrey's son Christian (who's a rising 9th grader).

Ed McCaffrey's Son Making A Name for Himself

James Pallitto

Drew Brees' statline from Super Bowl XLIV was impressive, but it wasn't his face that made the covers of the newspapers the following Monday morning. Nope, it was Baylen Brees who was hoisted in the air following New Orleans' win, celebrating the victory in the arms of his father.

But before there was a Baylen Brees, there was a Christian McCaffrey.

Eleven years ago, Ed McCaffrey was on the Denver Broncos and celebrating a Super Bowl win. As cameras panned across the hugs of jubilant teammates, they closed in on Christian McCaffrey, a 2-year-old in a Broncos jersey, swimming in a sea of confetti. The image made a two-page spread in the February 8, 1999, edition of Sports Illustrated and created a national stir.

Christian McCaffrey didn't fit in his father's jersey then, but he's starting to fill the frame now. Earlier this month, the Colorado born and bred football player won the 'G Award' at the Football University camp in Miami.

"Christian has excellent understanding of the game of football," said Football University head coach Glenn Smith, who was formerly on the coaching staff of the Dallas Cowboys. "He runs with the correct body lean, he carries his pads at the right football level, he has great eye-hand coordination and has an ability to accelerate after the catch. He's a physically gifted football player."

And a well profiled one.

McCaffrey was back in Sports Illustrated last year as a 'Face in the Crowd,' after earning MVP honors at the Youth All-American Bowl. One day after watching top seniors play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, McCaffrey played both ways in the 7th grade all-star game against some of the top middle school talent in the nation.

In January, McCaffrey returned to San Antonio and to the Alamodome for the 8th-grade game.

He hasn't decided what high school he will attend in the fall.

A tagalong in training camp and the trainer's room, McCaffrey was always around the game, but father Ed never pressured him to play it. If pressure came from any direction, it was from teammates.

"I try to ignore (pressure) and instead of worrying about what he did, I worry about what I'm doing," Christian said. "There's always pressure, but I always let it go by me."

Side-stepping tacklers with the ease he does pressure, McCaffrey has produced on the field. Idolizing Barry Sanders, McCaffrey removed all comparisons to his father by choosing running back.

The results have been impressive.

After sorting through a year's worth of game tape, the elder McCaffrey estimates his son scored 63 touchdowns this past year, in addition to his 50 from the previous season. That's not the only way he differs from dad.

"I don't know that I had the confidence he has," Ed said. "I was probably not quite as confident at that age. I just love watching him. He definitely has an infectious love and enthusiasm."

Evidence of his contagious confidence is that McCaffrey's hometown team for 7th and 8th graders is riding a 95-game winning streak. While his team is winning games, McCaffrey's position choice is losing its battle with genetics. Only 13, McCaffrey is already 5-foot-10. It seems inevitable his frame will be better-suited for wide receiver - just like dad.

Even his father, who hauled in 565 passes and 55 touchdowns in his 13-year career, said that his son has "exceeded expectations."

While he may well grow into that old jersey worn by his 6-foot-5 father, McCaffrey's not expecting to wear one on Sunday's quite yet, despite his early success.

"He knows that's one in a million and a lot has to happen along the way," Ed said. "He enjoys the day now and plays to win today."

Great find Dixie. The elder McCaffrey was one hell of an athlete and from what is sounds like his son will be just as good, only he can look up to guys like Gerhart, Wegher, Burkhead, and McGuffie for inspiration if he chooses to continue playing runningback. He sounds very confident which is definitely a plus

If I remember right, Ed McCaffrey married Mia Hamm the soccer star. If that is the case, this kid has amazing genetics. It sure sounds like it with the speed he has. I just hope he doesn't grow too tall to be a running back or they will have to move him to wide receiver. He should be a star either way. Thanks for posting this.

Ed married a lady named Lisa. She looks athletic to me. They are happily married and they have three boys. Great genetic indeed. Very cute couple.

Ed McCaffrey's wife Lisa, is the daughter of Fifties sprinter David Sime. I looked in SI Vault and found an article from November 30, 1998 titled "White Lightning." The writer, Michael Silver, calls McCaffrey a "goofy looking white guy," and it goes from there.

Lisa is quoted as saying, "That's why Ed and I got together-so we could breed fast white guys."

Dig further into the SI Vault and you can find the July 2, 1956 issue which has Dave Sime and Bobby Morrow on the cover with a story inside.

Michael Silver sounds like a typical caste-lackey clown...probably a tribesman too ("Silverstein", etc.). Ed McCaffrey was a helluva a WR, and his brother Billy was a stud hoops player at Duke & Vandy (too top notch schools...Ed went to Stanford). Ed's sister Monica played hoops at Georgetown. Quite an athletic family. Caste jock-sniffers like "Silverstein" are just insanely jealous...as they don't have an athletic bone in their (weak@$$) bodies!

Wow that is great news. I know alot about Dave Sime. That is back in the days when you still saw white sprinters holding their own in the USA. They were not told that they couldn't compete yet like now a days which is a lie. Take away the roids, and it's a whole new ball game. I hope this kid stays at running back. He could end up being special if he has half the moves of Barry Sanders. The kid picked a good idol. Sanders was usually respectful and was never a guy that said look at me i.m.o. Todays guys have very little or no respect and give no credit to the offensive line.

If he stays at RB, he's better off not growing more than 4 or 5 inches as he's already tall enough for college. This kid has VERY athletic blood lines and could probably be a star at either RB and WR in the FBS and then on to the NFL if he keeps this up.

He sure does ToughJ. I hope he doesn't have to complete a racial apprenticeship should he make it to the NFL. Ed got some playing time for the Giants but it took a new team(Broncos) for his career to really get going and have three 1,000 yard receiving seasons.

What can Mccafrey do in track? The blood lines are there. People forget to mention his grandfather (Dave Sime) held about four world records in the 1950s in the sprints and low hurdles. There are at least two videos showing Sime on the internet: one is the 1960 Olympics when he got a second place and the other is beating Bobby Morrow at Big Spring Texas in 1958.

Both McCaffrey boys are posting in the mid to high 11's in the 100 this year according to Colorado Milesplithttp://co.milesplit.com/teams/VALO/performances<div>
</div><div>Max has D1 Football offers and reports a 4.47 40 but sounds like a stretch considering the electronic 100 times. Maybe not but 4.47 is a blazing start for someone in the mid 11's</div>

I wanna bump this thread because this kid is crazy good, I stumbled onto him accidentally when viewing Max McCaffrey's hudl highlights and noticed Max blocking for a killer white RB who turned out to be his brother.

He already has a dozen big time offers out west and he's only a rising junior. I hope he goes to Boise St.

Christian McCaffrey verbally committed to Stanford....Florida State was one of his many offers...curious if the Noles would have actually given him a chance at tailback??

Is this sarcasm? I thought WDB predicted he would go to Duke like his brother?
It was sarcasm. The dude knew his football but thats about it. Its good to see though that this kid may start as a true freshman as Tyler Gaffney and the other guy I believe are both seniors. I know the team has Barry Sanders Jr. but I know nothing about him though I respected his dad on and off the field. One of the very few class acts out of his bretheren.

The dude knew his football, who, WDB, I'm not so sure. It's easy to surf Rivals and Scout for guys who supposedly run this time or that. 9 times out of 10 the times posted are lies. If someone says they ran a 4.4, 40 they probably ran a 4.6 or higher. The legit 4.4, 40 is 1 in a million!

I'm not trying to be a smart a$$, but how do you know WDB knew his football? (If that's who your speaking of) You've only been posting since February.

WDB, went by many names, if I recall and kept getting banned!
