What do you all think of Chase Utley, is he the Brian Roberts of the NL?

Utley just signed a huge 7 year 85 million extension. He is by far the best 2B in baseball. If only the Phillies were a better team Utley would get more exposure liek he deserves. Although being on the same team as Howard who the media loves takes the spotlight away from such a great all around player such as Utley.

I live in Philadelphia, and Utley is my favorite baseball player. The old school gritty type player, he is going to be special. He had a 35 game hit streak during the year and is a guy who can 35 homers and drive in 120 RBIs. His fielding is not exceptional but not bad either. Not only is the best second baseman in all of baseball, he is among the best players in the league period. He receives a lot of attention here in Philadelphia and is much more loved by the fans than Howard (no matter what they try to say on ESPN).

Yeah I can see Utley jerseys outselling the Howard ones. Although you'd never know by the way the national media covers the two players.

If you go to a game in Philadelphia, you'll find many more people wearing Utley shirts and jerseys. Howard has a lot of fans also, but Utley reigns supreme here. Cole Hamels and Aaron Rowand are also a major fan favorites

I guess these marketing idiots think by promoting Howard they'll actually get Philly's black people to be interested in the Phillies. I guess they just don't realize the facts that the majority of black people don't like watching baseball even if the best players are black.

Although only non-whites are allowed to be mentioned when the subject is baseball's best players, Chase Utley takes a backseat to no one. He's having another spectacular season. The second baseman leads the NL in RBIs with 79 and is third in batting at .338. He's also third in runs scored, second in hits, first in doubles with an amazing 40, and is first in total bases.


But for some reason Utley doesn't get nearly the national hype that other great hitters do. In fact he ranks a poor second on his own team in that department to Ryan Howard. Does he lack charisma? A great smile? Whatever it is, Justin Morneau, Ryan Braun, Hunter Pence, Matt Holliday, Aaron Rowand, Brian Roberts, Reggie Willits, Michael Young, Adam Dunnand others seem to be lacking in the same department.

I know this is obvious and maybe doensn't add much to this thread, but still, if Utley were black he would be on ESPN every night. They would be talking about him as one of the greatest players in the game today. there are people who don't watch baseball but know who Bonds, Aaron, Mays are. But ask them who Utley and other great white players are and they would be hard pressed to tell you what they do for a living.

I agree Skipperron, when you watch ESPN sports center you would think that MLB is close to 80% black. As far as I can tell they only show highlights of minority players with the emphasis on black. You only get to see a white player highlight if they had a significant impact on the outcome of the game. I think ESPN is the epicenter of the caste system.

Yeah, and try reading their magazine from ESPN. Wow, you need to really look hard to see ANY white people in that rag, whether it is articles or ads.

Chase Utley, Philadelphia's All-Star second baseman, broke his right hand in Thursday's 7-6 defeat to the Washington Nationals.


Utley was hit in the fifth inning by John Lannan, who was making his major league debut. Utley finished the game, going 2-for-4, but X-rays afterward showed he broke a bone in the hand.


Utley planned to see a specialist on Friday to determine the first step in his recovery.


"As breaks go, it's not that bad of a break," Utley said. "It's definitely disappointing."


Utley, batting .336 with 17 homers and 82 RBIs, didn't think he'd be sidelined for a month.

Utley is just about the ONLY white player in the top ten in any offensive catagory in either league. It is a horrible year for white hitters. They look like sh!t and their collective poor performances is enabling the non-white takeover of the game. C'mon guys start hitting!

Utley has two homers in the game against the Mets so far tonight, five in the last four games, and leads the majors with eight on the season. If he can stay healthy he's gonna have a monster season. He just keeps getting better and better. He had over 100 RBIs last year despite missing 30 games with a broken hand. Even Joe Morgan said tonight that Utley may end up being the best hitting second baseman ever.

Cool to see a lot of Philadelphia fans on the site. Thought I was alone when I joined. As a Philly guy, I was upset they parted ways with Aaron Rowand. He was a real hard-nosed type guy and a fan favorite...but I love me some Chase Utley.

By the way the Phillies started only one minority in the game tonight (4/20): 1B Ryan Howard. Jimmy Rollins is injured, Pedro Feliz and Carlos Ruiz are hitting very poorly. Hooray for team-of-white-guys!

Yeah, the Phils were a nice sight to see tonight, especially against the Mets (though David Wright is a great player and like Utley is only getting better). Pat Burrell has been one of the best hitters in baseball since last July. And Ryan Howard looks completely lost at the plate.


Starting shortstops -- Bobby Crosby, Michael Young, David Eckstein and Adam Everett in the AL; Jack Wilson, Troy Tulowitzki, Khalil Greene, Stephen Drew, and Jeff Keppinger (who may lose his starting position when last year's starter comes off the DL) in NL. Any others?

Utley's homered in five consecutive games for the second time this season. He leads the majors with 21 HRs in just over a third of a season, four more than anyone else. He's second in the NL in RBIs with 52. Not bad for a second baseman!
