whiteCB, he's number 31.
i watched the game last night on ESPN2, and even stayed up to catch the second half after a 2-hour lightning delay. i know, insert joke here...
the game i watched, and the game the announcers were talking about was evidently not the same one. the announcers kept lauding the
vastly superior speed and athleticism of the #3-nationally ranked, Lufkin all-black Panthers. and while they were fast, their receivers and DBs looked slower than the Highlanders'.
they also kept sniffing on Lufkin wide receiver dez bryant's jock. he is definitely an impressive player, but they kept raving about his speed... which was not apparent at all (and it turned out, he only runs a 4.58 40... wow!
). what he did have was physically imposing size and strength. he looked like a grown man, and he might be as old as one, considering how the announcers kept talking about his struggles in the classroom.
he ended the game with 10 catches for 152 yards and 2 TDs. impressive numbers, but misleading from a talent perspective. he caught a 45-yard TD on the first series of the game off a busted coverage, and had a 51-yard TD off a trick play. so if you take those two blown assignments away, he had 8 catches for 56 yards... not that stellar. but you make the call...
the biggest difference I saw was on the line, and
that was the reason for the lopsided score, 31-7 Lufkin. the Panthers' o-line and d-line
completely dominated the line of scrimmage on each side of the ball respectively, giving their own QB all night to throw, literally, while conversely, the Woodlands' offense was disrupted in the backfield on nearly every play. with the exception of a few big plays late in the game, and a couple of personal foul penalties, the Woodlands offense would have ended the game with negative yardage. ugh!
their receivers were running wide-open down the field, but the QB couldn't get 'em the ball. and their RB, while physical, looked slower than my mom. on defense, the Highlanders' DBs had to cover for 7-10 seconds every play. adding to that was the fact they were on the field for nearly the whole game, with their own offense only converting 2 first downs until late in the fourth quarter.
despite all that, there were several standouts for the Highlanders. Charbonnet was as good as advertised here! his technique is terrible, but the kid has blazing speed (evidently, at 5'11", 185-pounds he ran a 4.21 40 at Texas Tech's camp!
) and he is very tough. he looks like a little kid from a physically mature standpoint, as most of Woodland's players did, so his upside is tremendous.
also looking very fast and showing tremendous football talent were, #14-corner Chris Lake, #20-safety Taylor Skaufel, #11-linebacker Kyle Bouthilet, and wide receivers #3-Derek Wyatt and #5-Taylor Grote (who both supposedly run in the 4.4s, and looked like it)
additionally, many of these players are Ivy League-caliber students.
now, if they could just get some decent linemen...
