Right now my perception of these two is that they're white. I realize the media has covered Romo's Mexican grandparents in 'getting to know Romo' type storylines, but so far they haven't labeled him as a Hispanic quarterback, the way they do 'black' quarterbacks.
Except for boxing and soccer, Hispanics aren't considered that athletic either. It's possible the media is unsure of just how to label these two and what to make of their stories, if anything.
I'm sure if Dallas makes the Super Bowl something will be made of Romo's Hispanic heritage. It won't be long before the 'Hispanic community' is talking about him non-stop, the more popular he becomes.
It will still be a knock against the caste system per se, in that someone besides a black affalete can play ball, but on the other hand, that is one less good football player who will be considered 'white.
I actually agree with both arguments here. The perception of Losman is that he's white. So, if he is doing his part to break the Caste System, that's a good thing, even if he is half-Mexican or whatever the hell he is. Whereas Nick Goings or this guy from Boise State are perceived otherwise. They don't do a whole lot for us even if they are 75% white.
However, I will say that while the census says 77% of Americans are white, that includes the famous, "Hispanics can be any race", thus the estimates that this country is 77% white is way overestimating our numbers. There may be many Mexican-Americans who say they are Hispanic on the census, and thus default to white, but how many German-Americans do?

If I'm not mistaken, you don't claim white, then pick Hispanic. Hispanic is it's own selection on the form. I read the stats, but don't remember the form and haven't researched the subject that far, just going by memory so I could be wrong.
But anyway, I was using the census data to make a somewhat sarcastic joke, not because I believe whites are actually 77% of the population. I read that and wonder where they all live, because I certainly don't see them living around here!

btw have you guys noticed how noone seem to know current NFL sack leader Aaron Schobel?
he gets no publicity whatsoever, and his career has been nothing short of stellar.
59 sacks (in his sixth season), he also forced 11 fumbles and had 2 career interceptions, never had less than 42 tackles per season and yet he is a relatively unknown player.

What I suspect is the media is so locked into the black/white template that any further complexity simply doesn't exist.
I have never seen a Pacific Islander, Hispanic, white, or some combination thereof portrayed as a 'fight the power/up from the ghetto/sticking to the man/fierce warrior for his people'. 'Anthony Munoz proved himself a wizard in the classroom as well as on the field. He did what they could but they couldn't do what he did even on their best day.' 'This goes out to all my Samoan brothers and sisters in the Polynesian ghettos of Oceanside.' 'Yeah, I guess we were poor. Some people said we were so bad off we were white toxic waste instead of just white trash. So I guess I'm white toxic waste with money now.'

Bills sign Wire to three-year deal
Buffalo Bills special teams ace and reserve linebacker Coy Wire has signed a three-year contract to return to the team.
Wire was scheduled to become a free agent in March but opted to return for what next season will be his sixth with the Bills.
Wire said a big reason he wanted to stay was he saw the arrival of coach Dick Jauron last year as a breath of fresh air for the team.
"For the first time in five years here I can honestly say it was fun," Wire said. "It's a totally different makeup on the team now. I firmly believe this team is on the rise. I think we have a good core group of guys, and I think they're going to bring in the right kind of guys. You have to have chemistry in this league."
Wire was the Bills' top-ranked special-teams player last season, according to the grading system used by Bills assistant head coach Bobby April.
Wire also was happy about his late-season shift from the strong safety position, which he has played since being drafted in 2002, to linebacker. He saw spot duty at linebacker the last five games of the season, after the season-ending injury to Angelo Crowell.
"I'm excited to be back because of the type of defense we implemented," Wire said. "About five other teams play our defense, and two of them were in the Super Bowl. It fits my skills perfectly. I'm excited to be back at a position where I feel I'm more suited to play."
Wire is a former third-round draft pick. He now is signed through 2009.
Since Marv Levy took over as GM of the Bills, there has been an emphasis from the media that he wants "character players". I often wondered if this approach would lead to more whites on the team. Signing Wire and allowing him to compete at linebacker is a good sign. Heaven knows that a defensive backfield position is out of the question. I will be paying close attention to how the Bills Draft this year.
