BOISE, Idaho - The outcome of Friday's Spring Game at Boise State came down to one play. With the Blue Team (first team offense/second team defense) trailing 7-6 with a minute to play in the fourth quarter, coach Chris Petersen decided to go for two after scoring a touchdown.
With the right to eat a post game steak on the line, cornerback Orlando Scandrick jarred the ball out of Drisan James' hands to break up the pass and clinch a 7-6 win for the White Team (second team offense/ first team defense) in front of nearly 6,000 fans at Bronco Stadium.
"We didn't have enough steaks for everyone so we had to go for two," Petersen said referring to the pregame stakes involving steaks. The winners got a steak dinner after the game which wrapped up spring drills, the losers had to settle for good old fashioned hot dogs.
While the spring finale was low scoring, the offense seemed to get the better of the defense except when it came to getting in the end zone. Both offenses were stopped at the 1-yard line in the scoreless first half.
Quarterback Bush Hamdan (White Team) led the second string offense on an impressive 97-yard drive that moved the ball from their own 2-yard line to the Blue's 1-yard line for a first and goal. After a failed pass, a sweep and a quarterback sneak for no gain, Hamdan fumbled the snap on fourth down and goal and the White failed to score.
The Blue rallied marching down the field with time running out, but they came up a yard short when Jared Zabransky was tackled at the 1-yard line as time expired in the half on a 30-yard scramble.
Both teams were held scoreless until late in the game. The White got on the board first thanks to a big defensive play by cornerback Quinton Jones.
Jones picked off a Zabransky pass and returned it 28 yards to the Blue's 21-yard line. The Blue took advantage scoring on a 5-yard pass from Hamdan to Aiona Key for a 7-0 lead.
The White team rallied behind Taylor Tharp. Tharp hit Legedu Naanee with a 6-yard touchdown pass to set up the thrilling 2-point conversion try.
Tharp completed 8 of 9 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown and had a quarterback rating of 194.63. Hamdan connected on 11 of 18 passes for 121 yards and finished with a quarterback rating of 171.90. Nick Lomax (White Team) was 4 of 5 for 50 yards with a rating of 164.00.
Zabransky led all rushers with 42 yards while Jon Helmandollar (White Team) had 40 yards.
James caught six passes for 86 yards, while Helmandollar had three catches for 54 yards and Key had three catches for 24 yards.
Kyle Gingg and Jones finished with interceptions, both picking off Zabransky. Gingg, Scandrick and Nick Schlekeway led the White Team with four tackles each. Rashaun Scott and Dallas Dobbs topped the Blue Team with seven tackles apiece.
