Blacks on rise in tennis

Serena's victory over hapless and plodding Davenport puts her back on top of the women's tour. She could press for a grand slam but I sense she will come up short. That said there is a rising number of black players who may well dominate in the coming years. From France a lanky 18 year oldGael Monfils who leaps around the court and serves close to 140 mph. There are also several young Americanblack players expected to compete for grand slams. The most publicised is on the verge of winning th Aussie Junior crown. His name is Donald Young. I believe he is 15 and the pundits think he is ultra talented and super fast. The underlying theme of young male black emergence is that the white players will be reduced to second class citizens in much the same way as other popular sports not to mention in women's tennis where the William's sisters routinely humiliated their white counterparts not so long ago. The media will jump on this whole thing and Donald Young will be at the forefront. The sad irony is that wheras blacks keep making progress in sports whites continue to disappear down rabbit holes. In otherwords this added addition of blacks in tennis is not balanced by the fact that whites have madeany inroads at speed positions in football. Get ready for more heartache folks. It just keeps pouring down.

I'll believe it when I see it. Periodically we hear of "great black hopes" in the many sports where the black presence is non-existent or nearly so, but few pan out.

Zena Garrison, Yannick Noah, Malvai (sp?) Washington and a few others were blips on the tennis radar screen at one time or another but did not have memorable careers.

It's been ten years since Tiger turned pro. At the time, the media reassured us over and over that his success was going to quickly lead to black domination in golf as blacks took up the sport in great numbers, which they did. A decade later, Woods is still the only professional black golfer, male or female, and as this site has noted, his success can easily be attributed to his Asian genes more than his Negro ones.

Even if the extremely rare black tennis player or two does join the Williams sisters, tennis will remain a white dominanted sport. It's all in the percentages. Of the top 500 ranked tennis players how many are black? No more than one percent.

The media and other promoters of the myth of black athletic supremacy have done a good job of convincing the public that the presence of just one or two blacks in a sport translates to "black domination." I was listening to Chris Rock's latest comedy rant on HBO, and at one point he goes on and on about how blacks "own" football, basketball, boxing, golf and tennis, and goes on to say something to the effect of "wait until LeBron James comes along in hockey."

Does Rock also think that whites "dominate" rap because of the presence of Eminem? Of course not and nobody else does, yet the presence of a single black out of hundreds equates to most people to "black domination." If Dirk Nowitzke leads the NBA in scoring does this mean whites "dominate" basketball? Do whites now "dominate" sprinting because of Jeremy Wariner?

The reality remains that "black domination" is limited to a very few sports out of the many that are contested, but those few sports (and the black stars in them) are the ones disporportionately hyped by the media and through commercials, just as the rare black individuals in white dominated sports are relentlessly promoted as part of the propaganda of the caste system. Just think how the media would be if those up and coming Russian girls were American blacks? It would be Michelle Wie times one hundred.

Quite frankly, I don't see blacks making progress in any sports right now. Tiger has lost his domination, and so too have the Williams girls (at Venus has; it remains to be seen if Serena will return to where she was before), with no replacements in sight. In spite of the artificial nature of the caste system, whites are making progress in basketball, track and boxing. Football remains their one uncontested stronghold.

Very good points Don. Indeed it only takes one or two for the media to translate it into black domination. The texture of their ability also comes into play. With the Williams sisters it was "never seen before athleticism" that was trumpeted to high heavenand you can bet we might hear that when these black males come to the forefront. Sadly though the media can cast a giant shadow and leave many with the idea that the "speed etc. is only a black trait that whites will and shall never possess."

I hope your assesment is correct for I am sick to death of hearing about young and very youngblack athletes and their "speed etc" and suffering through white players being discussed as vehicles for black athletes to punish and not much more.

Let's see, we have the Muhammad Ali (Jo-Wilfried Tsonga) of tennis and Jimi Hendrix (Gael Monfils) on the tennis court. I guess we are going to have a decade long build up of the Mozart of tennis. ABC's Nightline featured six year old tennis prodigy, Jan Silva, last evening. The "Tiger Woods of tennis" is already training full time at an elite tennis academy in France. Amazing story, his parents picked up and moved to France from CA. so that the child could receive the training. If I understand the details, everything is expense free. Nice.

Genetically speaking, you don't see a child with straight blonde hair from an interracial couple too very often, if at all. His mother (also a tennis player) is Finnish and his dad is black. The media eats this stuff up.

There are some videos on youtube. The kid can hit a one-handed backhand.

HA -- over 3 years since this post and tennis is still dominated by whites. Same with boxing, wrestling, soccer, golf, swiming, hockey, international basketball ...etc.

When this thread was started the Williams sisters had been dominating for over 5 years and around this time there was belief that their Black male counterparts were going to emerge and challenge the White dominance on the mens side ,to many it was immenent. One hope that was continually brought up at this time was Donald Young. In 2004 there was a segment on him where John Mcenroe was taliking about him and the domination of his age group at junior level[he was 14]and Mcenroe was waxing lyrical over this kids potential saying his hands and touch are amongst the best he's seen to have that kind of 'touch' is something that's God given and cant be tought. His arrogent father who coaches him went as far to say that he will be better than Sampras the standard bearer for mens Tennis at the time.Nike gave Young a contract at 14,which i would think is unusual for a young prospect in Tennis and anyone could see the agenda of Nike in that they were getting ready to market the hell out of Young's Blacleticism making him the Jordan/Woods of Tennis as he crushes his White opponents with Blacleticism and charisma packaged by Nike to the masses.I remember this and frequenting some Tennis boards at the time where there seemed to be some resentment to Young, many probably understood the agenda, most felt Young was getting too much exposure and hype.Seven years on and Young now 21 almost 22 has been a collosal bust with a gittering ATP record 18-50 and no titles.Good to see,i bet that's thrown a wrench in Nikes plans.

The other Black American prospects hav'nt worked out either.Sam Querry and John Isner are young White players who have both become better pro players than Young, both bigger, stronger with amongst the best serves in the game yet neither recieved anywhere near Young's exposure or endorsments.I can undersatand Sunshines pessimism around this time as i felt the same way but the last 2 years have been a real purple patch for White athlees in all sports and still no Black takeover of the mens game.Edited by: Mighty Joe

Nike protege at the age of 14 Donald Young has now lost 12 first round matches in a row.

Yes 'sunshine' who started this thread, was noted for his particulary gloomy predictions. I haven't seen him post in a while, perhaps the clouds moved away and he went on to brighter endeavors. Note that Don was spot on, as usual, in looking at the big picture. His post (with the exception of a Jeremy Wariner mention--ouch that didn't pan out for us) is as correct today as it was 7 years ago.
