That rarest of rarities, a black who excels at something other than football, basketball, boxingor sprinting, has been found. Speed skater Shani Davis may win gold for the U.S. in the upcoming Winter Olympics.

This article alone gives him more pre-Olympics publicity than Jeremy Wariner received as a pre-Olympics favorite in the 400 at the Athens games. It would almost be fun to see him win gold, because then the media line will be that he is opening the sport up for blacks to participate in (and of course dominate), much like the arrival of Tiger Woods was heralded as the beginning of a black takeover of golf.

It will be interesting to see how the media spins this guy. It says in the article that his best event is the 1500 meters, which is a middle distance event in speed skating. The 500 meters is the sprint. So he doesn't fit the black stereotype of "explosive, quick twitch, athletic, fast" mold. Is he going to described with the same adjectives as most black athletes when he can't even be competitive with the white or asian sprinters? At the short track trials in the U.P., he wouldn't talk to the media.

The dates for the long track trials were changed so as to allow
him a better chance to qualify there too -- but he skipped them.

Whether it's basketball or ice skating, the "Me First" black aff-lete always displays his true color (pun much intended).

There is no better way to destroy team spirit than to employ a mix of people who don't care to be together in the first place. This is true in all endeavours -- business, military, civic organizations, and sport. I really wish Hedrick has called the spade a spade (pun very much intended).

Davis was already the world-record holder in the 1000m. The opening line of the article? "Shani Davis knew what he was doing." Yes, he knew he would probably win his individual event but cost the U.S. TEAM a gold medal. Sound familiar?

Trust me, they are not going to have any problem hyping this guy. First black to ever win an individual gold medal in Winter Olympic history? He will get plenty of publicity. More "proof" that if blacks wanted to, they would dominate winter sports, too.

Well, everyone knew that he would win this event. The good news is that he probable will not win anything else. It looks like the US will win all five of the individual speed skating events. Hendrick is favored to win the 1500 and the 10000. He has already taken the 5000 and Cheek won the 500 meter race. However, watch Davis get more press then Cheek and Hendrick put together. The odds of Davis metaling in the 1500 are not very high.

I believe NBC is televising Davis' gold medal win tonight. I won't be watching it but if anyone does let us know how it's covered. I taped Wariner's win in the 400 meters in Athens in '04 and the total time alloted by NBC in the aftermath of the first white American to win a gold in a sprint in 40 years was five minutes. And that included a group interview with Wariner and the two black Americans in the race.

Geez, the poor guy, it seems his feelings got hurt just because his teammates were actually mad at him for dumping on them and putting his own interests above the teams. A real class act.
