Jury finds teen guilty in Jr. football shootings
MAYS LANDING, NJ - The teenager who shot and wounded three people at a youth football game in 2005 was convicted Thursday of 12 charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons possession charges after a four-day trial, Atlantic County First Assistant Prosecutor Murray Talasnik said.
Lorenzo Belfor, 18, faces as many as 40 years in prison when he is sentenced July 11, Talasnik said.
Belfor was 15 years old the night of Oct. 1, 2005, when he got into an argument with Antonio Witherspoon, 19, and came back with a handgun to the game between the Pleasantville Jokers and the Atlantic City Dolphins at Max Manning Field in Pleasantville. He approached Witherspoon, who was in the stands behind the end zone, from behind and started shooting. The players in the game were 12 and 13 years old, police said at the time.
Witherspoon was hit in the neck, Reginald Reid, 40, in the left thigh and Devin Moore, 30, in the lower right back, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Cary Shill told the jury during the trial.
In closing arguments, Shill told the jury that Belfor showed absolute disregard for human life by firing into a crowd filled with children and families. About 2,000 people attended the game.
All three victims were released from the hospital within a few days of the shooting.
Belfor was arrested again in Sept. 2006, while out on bail for the football-game shooting, after he allegedly pointed a gun at a 17-year-old boy and threatened to kill him during an altercation on Doughty Road. He was charged with aggravated assault, making terroristic threats and weapons offenses.
He also was charged with weapons offenses after police found a sawed-off shotgun in a Somers Point motel room where he was staying with his older brother, who police say shot at the home and car of Pleasantville police Chief Duane Comeaux on Oct. 3, 2006.
