Of Course There Are Black Serial Killers

Jake Bird (1901-1949), a transient, might have been one of the most prolific serial killers in the nation, although the case failed to capture the attention of the national press, according toHistoryLink.org. Bird was caught in Tacoma on October 30, 1947, after breaking in the home of Bertha Kludt and her daughter Beverly June Kludt and hacking them to death with an ax. He confessed to the killings, reportedly saying it was a burglary gone awry. On Nov. 26, 1947, following a three-day trial, he was convicted of first-degree murder. While on death row, he confessed to committing or being involved in 44 murders during his travels across the country. He was hanged at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla on July 15, 1949.

Anthony Sowell, 50, was arrested in 2009 after a woman complained she had been raped at his Cleveland home. Soon after the police went to his house to question him, they discovered 11 bodies buried in his backyard. The unemployed former U.S. Marine, who neighbors say sold scrap metal, reportedly lured his victims -- all of them black -- to his home with promises of alcohol and drugs, the police said. He then strangled and left their bodies in the house or buried them in the backyard, reports say.

Andre Crawford, 47, a Navy veteran who was accused of raping and killing women during the 1990s, was found guilty in 2009 of committing a series of rapes on Chicago's South Side. Crawford, who was dubbed the Englewood-area serial killer, was accused of stabbing, strangling and bludgeoning 11 drug addicts and prostitutes, and brutally assaulting a 12th victim who escaped after pretending to be dead. He reportedly killed the victims, smoked crack cocaine and returned to have sex with their corpses in the same abandoned buildings where some of their decayed bodies were found months later.

Lorenzo Gilyard reportedly murdered more women than Jack the Ripper during his time as s serial killer -- about 13 -- and no one paid attention. He began strangling prostitutes in his hometown of Kansas City, Mo., in 1977 at the age of 26, according to TruTV. He retired in 1993 at the age of 42, reports say. The only reason he was caught was that DNA evidence fell into the "lap of the city's homicide detectives.'' Three years later, he was convicted and sentenced to life prison without the possibility of parole.

Wayne Williams was believed to be one of the most prolific serial killers in the 1970s and 1980s. He is suspected of killing 27 black youths in the Atlanta area, mostly boys between the ages of 7 and 14, from October 1979 to May 1981. However, he was convicted only in the murders of two adults. The cases shook the local community at the time because of fears that racism diminished the strength and speed of law enforcement's response to the killings.
Season 2 of the Netflix show Mindhunters focuses on the Atlanta serial murderer Wayne Bertram Williams. The show was pretty good and talked about the racial political angle as Atlanta had its first black mayor and the black citizens all believed it was The Klan killing these boys. The protagonist FBI agent believes, from his research on serial killers, that the man they will be looking for is black since most spree killers chose victims within their racial group. He catches flack from many characters for this profile but he’s proven right in the end.

If Williams did commit all 27 murders, he’d be amongst the most prolific in US history, yet he’s unknown to 99% of the populace.

Maybe 99% of those under a certain age, but in 1981 it was a huge national story for months on end, a regular feature on the national news shows. And once Williams was caught and it turned out he was black and not a Klansman then he was indeed quickly deposited in the media's memory hole. And undoubtedly a large number of people of older people have also completely forgotten about him, but not 99%.

The notion that the Klan was doing this in heavily black Atlanta circa 1979-1981 was almost as ludicrous a claim as it would be now. Just shows again how easily most people can be manipulated by narratives no matter how irrational, in this case blacks.

Atlanta's black population talked themselves into believing the Klan was going into black neighborhoods killing young black males without being seen. The national media HOPED the killer(s) would be white. When Williams was arrested the media lost interest for the most part.

Yes, it was the biggest story in America at its height.

My apologies gentlemen.

I guess for anyone born after 1981 or too young to remember or care, he’s a total unknown. Berkowitz, Bundy, Gacy, Dahmer and even Manson, who never technically killed anyone, all perpetrated their murders around the same time or earlier. All are known, at least as serial killers by name, to the average Gen Xer or millennial. Williams should be a household name to everyone of all ages, but I’m just preaching to the choir......

I recall the story and huge news it was. I know Time had a cover and a big feature story and the arrest of the Williams, but once that happened unlike say Bundy the trial was local not national.

Wasn't their also speculation that a Gacy type doing this ie a gay pedophile who was probably White. My memory is hazy because it was close to 40 years ago, but it was shortly after Gacy and the theory was the victims were duped into obediently following the killer.

That may have been floated but what mattered was the killer(s) was white. They were wholly fixated in that direction, didn't matter who as long as they were white.

When Williams was arrested the MSM lost interest. And the case itself was largely forgotten after being the top story in the country for months.

Currently watching a special on the Kansas City Strangler. Gilyard lived a double life. Successful man had a wife, job, house, cars. But he liked killing prostitutes in his free time.

Coral Eugene Watts is another negro serial whom police have no idea how many women he killed. When asked how many he had killed he said "more than the number of fingers and toes in the room." They were 8 police officers in the room at the time. He died from cancer.

Watts came within weeks of getting out of prison because of the deal the D.A. gave him on his first conviction. They luckily found a cold case they could try him on and got a conviction.
