For you guys that love mopars and especially Dodge Chargers, watch the movie "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry". Also Vanishing Point with the 1970 Dodge Challenger. Both great movies.

The second I saw the title of this thread I knew the chase in bullet would on top of the list. That challenger(I believe) had an advance over the 68 Mustang. Look closer at each cars burn outs. The challenger wheels both leave smoke ( LSD) rearend, great traction. The Mustang in this movie had an open rearend(one wheel moving the car as opposes to two wheels) most of the time LSD was a special order on Mustangs.

One day I will by a 67/68 Mustang fast and clone it Bullet Ste. Currently I have 66 Mustang that has a bunch of goodies on it. Hipo Style!

Westside, good point about the differences in the cars. Great on-screen proof of why the 390GT engine in a Mustang was not effective as a stop gap in the Pony Car Wars in '67 and early '68. Chevy had introduced the SS 396 in the Camaro and the 390GT could not keep up with it on the drag strip. The Dodge in the chase scene had a 440 with a beefed up suspension. The early '68 GT390 in the chase scene had a modified engine and suspension. Still, like you pointed out, the rear ends were different. Now, had they used a '68 1/2 Mustang GT with a 428 Cobra Jet, it would have been a different story. Those cars didn't come with an open rear end they had well over 400 HP. They ruled the Camaro in the quarter when the more potent Stangs were unleashed at the '68 Winternationals.

Col Reb I am kinda of a Mustang fanactic. Yeah the 390 of 68 was somewhat of a dissappointment, but with today's techonology, ie: carb, intake, roller rockers, heads and headers, the 390 would have been a beast! Easily putting out 400 hp / 400 tq. I agree if the 68 Stang had a 478 Cobra Jet, no contest. But against this Charger it more than held its own.

Its fun tooling around and more importantly driving around in my 66 Mustang. It has a wide assortment of modifications/goodies, but to the naked eye it looks like it came off the showroom floor in 1966. The biggest and best mod is installing a Tremec 5 speed. Great for freeway driving. I could go on and on what I have done to her. If you want to know just ask.

Also, LSD stands for Limited Slip Differential. It provides for grip on both rearend tires, especially on acceleration and it turning. Open rear(most cars then and today) provides just one wheel, usually the right rear. Once you go LSD you will understand and feel the difference.

I mean't 428 instead of 478, regarding the Corba Jet engine, I work nights and kinda of tired. But older cars, especially the 60s and late 70s Mustangs are a passion of mine.
