The other signing that raised eyebrows this offseason was the Raiders picking up linebacker Curtis Lofton. The veteran may be the starter at middle linebacker, but he’s clearly not a long-term answer. For that reason alone, rookie middle linebacker Ben Heeney is worth keeping an eye on Friday night.

Heeney has also made his share of plays during training camp and will see extended playing time. Heeney didn’t have elite measurables, but he was a top performer in college. If he keeps making plays against backups, the Raiders may have to consider getting him some snaps against starters to see if he can keep it up.

He's played sparingly his rookie season. Did play this past weekend and recorded 8 tackles. Has 21 tackles, 1.5 sacks,and forced fumble on the year. IF given time and room to develop, another promising young LB.

It looks like Heeney's going to shorten his racial apprenticeship significantly. He's only behind Curtis Lofton on the depth chart, and he's been outplaying Lofton. The breaks have come together a bit for Ben, supa-rookie Neiron (his real name) Ball was IR'd and Ray-Ray Armstong sucked so bad he was waived. Even DWF's are calling for the lunch-pail carrying high-motor scrappy sneaky fast Heeney to be the starter.

Heeney as of now is listed as the Raiders starting middle linebacker. He'll put up monster tackling numbers this season.

And he gives Oakland a second White starter to go along with David Carr. Woohoo!
