I know it's football season, but I still have to ask. Who are your NL and AL MVPs and Cy Youngs?

I would say...

NL MVP: David Wright, 3B, Mets
NL CY: Tim Lincecum, Giants

AL MVP: Dustin Pedroia, 2B, Red Sox
AL CY: Cliff Lee, Indians

The only sure bet would be C.Leewith a smoking 22-2 record, on ateamseveral games under .500. Awesome.

PhillyBirds: Cliff Lee is a shoo-in for the AL Cy Young, but I`m not sure about the others.

I think many in the MSM would like to give both NL awards to C.C. Sabathia.

Cliff Lee has dominated all season for the Tribe, but Sabathia could not, especially early on in the season when he was so out of shape it was disgusting.

Tim Lincecum would be a good choice for NL Cy Young as you point out.

Webb is legit for the NL Cy Young too, in my opinion. Everyone is drooling for Sabathia, but if you add his numbers from the AL, he is far from Cy Young-worthy. Of course, everyone conviniently neglects that.

As much as I'd love to see a white win the NL MVP award, I just don't see it happening. Carlos Delgado has stolen Wright's thunder in NY and I just don't see any other whites really close, other than Berkman who has not been that good down the stretch. I think Howard is/will carry the Phillies into the playoffs and the media will blow his candidacy up as the next great black hope of baseball with his 2nd MVP award.

As much as I'd love to see a white win the NL MVP award, I just don't see it happening.

Yeah, I sat here for like, 5 minutes trying to think of someone. Wright is kind of pushing it, but I had to think of a white player that had a flashy season. Wright is certainly above average, but I see what you mean. Everything else is pretty straightforward though.

Too bad Utley cooled off but he's still had a great all-around year. There's a lot of guys in the NL having nice years but they're on crappy teams.


Ryan Howard -- can the MVP award really go to someone with a .249 average and 200 strikeouts? I guess the homers and ribbies alone can do it, but a one-tool player with such glaring weaknesses being the MVP doesn't sit right with me.

Don, the thing with Howard is he's absolutely on fire right now. He's hit his hot streak at the right time, when people start to seriously consider who is the MVP. He was all but silent earlier in the season, but people only think about the here-and-now.

I love how he's helping the Phils of late, but I hate people's shortsightedness and bias. His raw numbers awe people, plain and simple.

Carlos Quentin was a lock for AL MVP until he injured himself. He carried the team when Konerko, Thome, and Dye were slumping. Carlos was huge for the Chisox this year. I can't take that away from him because he had a heck of a year. The problem was he injured himself during a pennant race. He didn't injure himself on the field. He injured himself in the locker room because he got angry. That is either good or bad. Good because he shows he wants to win and hates losing. Bad because he hurt his team in the long run.

Justin Morneau does the same for the Twins. The Twins weren't even suppose to be close. I fear Morneau. I would walk Morneau with two outs and the bases load in a tie ballgame just to get to Delmon Young. That's how scary Morneau is. No one else in the league makes me feel like that.

Dustin Pedroia only wins if the MVP needs to be a player on a playoff team. He shouldn't even be picked runner up. I hate that guy.

Cliff Lee should be a lock for AL CY. However I wouldn't be surprised if Francisco Rodriquez won it. He broke the save record. It wouldn't be the first time a relief pitcher won the award. Plus he's the right color.

Let me say that I am waiting to see who gets gold gloves this year. Now I am a Pirates fan so I have an interest here. That is because Nate McLouth is one of the best centerfielders in the game and has NOT MADE AN ERROR this year. Not one. But will he get the award or will it your to someone who is "ahem" more athletic.


Also I gotta give my vote for the Cy Young to Cliff Lee. He has put up incredible numbers.

You nailed three out of four! The AP article about Pedroia winning the AL MVP is obsessed with his height, which is listed at 5' 9". That's short for a baseball player but hardly qualifies Pedroia as a dwarf. Here's how the AP article, replete with the mandatory self-effacing comment,begins:

I just checked and Jimmy Rollins is listed at 5' 8", or an inch shorter than Pedroia. Yet I don't remember any articles focusing on his height or "lack of tools," or saying that he could be mistaken for a porter, after Rollins won the MVP award last year.


Pedroia's quote is so classic Caste-ese one wonders if the AP reporter didn't simply check his glossary of terms for white athletes and plug it in without waiting for Pedroia to say anything. ("He's not the fastest guy in the world," "He's not the most athletic specimen you'll find," "He's not the biggest guy in the world," etc.)
