Federer has always been stoic. It's not always fair to rush the players onto the stage and force them to talk to the fans and an international audience right after a long and grueling match. Federer should have been allowed to go to the locker room for a while to gather himself. But the demands of television contracts always trumps everything else, including sometimes compassion.

I didn't like the crying. He lost, man up. Tennis is got a wimpy enough rep without the guys crying too.
jaxvid, I see no shame in seeing a proud man like Federer cry, and I don't blame him either. Any guy would cry if they lost to the same opponent 5 times.

He lost to Nadal 5 times in 7 meetings, straight in their last 3 meetings. After watching Federer try extremely hard to beat Rafa and lose in their last three meetings, it's enough make anybody cry their guts out.

But have no fear, I'm sure Federer can win at least 1 or 2 Majors (either Wimbledon or US) this season. Even though he'll make run for the French, Wimbledon and the US are his best chance.

Best of luck to Federer, and congrats to Rafa, for his remarkable improvement on all surfaces other than clay.

I just lost in raquetball to a guy 5 times in a row, I didn't cry, punched a locker-- but didn't cry.

I just don't get the tears. Anger yeah, but crying? Anyway it doesn't matter to me, people do the most embarassing stuff all the time--it seems to me--and everyone else is OK with it, so what do I know?

You know jaxvid, I was thinking I wouldn't mind seeing Fed vent a little during a match. Nothing drastic, maybe mangle a water bottle or something on a change over.

Great final indeed. When two great white men go at it like that, it really doesn't matter who wins, although I was rooting for Federer just so he can get that record over with. Although, I also agree with some here that Nadal could indeed pass them both. (Sampras, and Federer if he gets there).

What an amazing physical specimen Nadal is. He's a superb athlete on top of simply being the best tennis player in the world at the moment. It's truly great to watch him play as he shows all the caste-clowns that whites do not lack anything in the world of sports.

If Nadal were born in America he'd probably be a Pro-Bowl safety in the NFL (wouldn't be allowed to play running back of course). The man is built like a rock and is so athletic. I look forward to him dominating tennis for years, unless an American can beat him.

Bump.

'10 Open is already here.

At 29 the FedExpress is going to find it tough sledding with so many young guns playing so well.

Should be a good Open.

Sharapova out in the first round. She was defeated by another Russian, Maria Kirilenko, in a match that lasted 3 hours and 11 minutes. Almost unbelievably it was Sharapova's first competitive match since the US Open (Labor Day weekend, I think). She chose to only play exhibition matches since then and it's hurt her.

Roddick looks like he'll to ease his way into the second round. His friend Terrell Owens flew down to hang out with him. Maybe TO can spread his unique locker room poison into Roddick's camp.

Things are relatively safe on the men's side, as we have so many talented white players, and it should make for an incredible tournament.

As for the women's, sadly, the Williams sister will once again be among the heavy favorites, and I'm really hoping one of the Belgians can once again come thru and knock them out. The Russians and others have a major mental weakness against the sisters, but both Henin and Clijsters have no fear against either one.

Looking forward to the Aussie Open 2010!

This tournament always interferes with the amount of sleep I get as some of the best matches are televised all the way to 2 am on most nights. I try to stay up when a american player is involved or Federer and the two Belgian ladies(Clijsters and Henin).

Another classless display from brat Roddick at the end of the match he won easily. He really is the Serena Williams of the men's game. I cringe every time I hear him go after the umpires, or for that matter, line officials, and even ball boys.

Justine Henin did well in her first match. (She also made it to the final of her first tournament back since retirement). However, she is not seeded and will play Dementieva in the 2nd round.

The Henin-Dementieva match was great - Justine won!

James Blake is out. To be fair to him he played well against US Open champion Del Potro. Blake is now 30 so I think it is safe to say he'll never win a major. (Not that he's ever been much of a threat!).

BTW ESPN sucks!!! You already know that, of course, but showing the Williams sisters doubles match on Tuesday night was valuable air time wasted. The TV channels never show doubles - unless the Williams sisters are playing. It was something like 6-1 6-2 but ESPN, like other American channels that have covered the sport, always give them priority over singles matches going on at the same time even though nobody follows doubles..

Glad to see Blake and Young gone. ESPN's coverage last night was pretty much a black-a-thon -- showing Blake, Young, Serena, studio interview with Venus, Chris Fowler praising Tsonga as the possible champion (to their credit McEnroe and Gilbert didn't give credence to Fowler's wet dream). I'm surprised they don't have a black announcer or twolike they do for other White-dominated sports, though maybe the rabid feminist Mary Carillo serves that purpose.

We're missing almost all the decent matches. Not only is ESPN Williams/Blake obsessed they'll show Federer winning 6-0 whilst a close match is going on elsewhere. For ESPN it is all about diversity, women, and big names.

I'm surprised they don't have a black announcer

They tried MaliVai Washington but it didn't work out. Given Blake's results and his relatively advanced age I wouldn't be surprised if ESPN/CBS/NBC have already approached him about his commentating future.

maybe the rabid feminist Mary Carillo serves that purpose

She's certainly mannish, probably a lesbian. Though she's a lot younger looking today than she was 20 years ago!

I wish they'd put Dick Enberg out to pasture. Ne never shuts up and he spends part of each tennis match jock-sniffing NFL and NCAA basketball players.

BTW it turns out they had three interviews with T.O. during Roddick's first match. Imagine how many there'll be if he stays around for the entire tournament.

Chris Fowler praising Tsonga

Dick Enberg said the other night that there's something special about the "two Frenchmen" (ie Tsonga and Monfils) which he later described as "elan".

On the bright side Caroline Wozniacki finally got some coverage: not a match, but an interview. They revealed that her nickname is "Sunshine". I'll bet Serena's never had that nickname!

I would like to see Roddick finally break through and win another slam regardless of his choice of friends like TO. I predict he will win a slam sometime this year and I hope Andy Murray takes that next step and wins Wimbledon. I also got tired of the black fest the other night, if you were new to the planet you would think that tennis is a majority black game from what was shown the other night.

Monfil's "athleticism" was referred to literally dozens of times before, during and after the match. Before it started there was a short piece quoting Isner on Monfil's athleticism, to the accompaniment of clips of Monfils running around the court. At the beginning of the match, Chris Fowler
smiley8.gif
referred to Monfil's "intimidating athleticism," and just about every time he made a nice shot it was attributed by one or another of ESPN's stable of tennis announcers and commentators to his "athleticism." Amazingly, even though Isner is 6' 9" and hit far more winners than Monfil, not a single one of his great shots was attributed to his athleticism. Nor was his booming serve or the way he moved around the court for such a big man. The winner (#33 seed) had no athleticism, while the loser (#12 seed) was overflowing with it.

Fowler also predicted that if it was a long match, Isner would lose because he wasn't as well conditioned as Monfils. Sorry, Chris, wrong again. Then there was the embarrassing exchange between Pam Shriver and WR Steve Smith of the Panthers, who was in the stands in Isner's box. Shriver jokingly asked the short Smith about his height compared to Isner, and Smith replied "big and small." Shriver saw fit to come back with, "But you're fast and he's slow." Isner's supposed lack of speed was another oft-repeated theme of the match, yet the lumbering non-athlete somehow prevailed over the much more experienced super-afflete in searing heat.

On a down note, Kim Clijsters looked like she mailed it in against Petrova, losing 6-0 6-1. Mary Jo Fernandez said early on that Clijsters looked "disheveled" and like "she was having a bad day," which it sure did. Don't know if she had an argument with her husband, the baby was acting up, or it was her period, or maybe all three, but it was an embarrassing performance.

You would think these morons would be more openly rooting for Isner since he is a American and would be good for ratings if he advances far into the tournament. But these fools hate to deviate off the prepared caste script for the day.

The excuses made for Clijsters by the ESPN women were straight from the feminist handbook.

Don mentioned Steve Smith of the Panthers. I watched an interview with him a couple of years ago. He was asked his favourite movies of all time. I was kind of expecting him to include ones directed Spike Lee or movies about black empowerment. I guess I'm cynical! But the ones he chose were all old fashioned action films with a white hero killing baddies!

Here's the women's draw. Azarenka certainly has the firepower to create problems, don't know if she can string together a complete match in the second week of a slam. It would be refreshing to see Maria Kirilenko advance.
