Next Tuesday, January 21 at 9 pm ET, the NFL Network has "A Football Life" episode on the late Redskin receiver, Jerry Smith.

The theme of the show (from the promo) appears to be Smith's homosexuality and how he kept it hidden. Smith is shown to be a very good football player.

The 1969 Redskins (Lombardi's last season) had three homosexuals in training camp, two on the season roster, Smith and Dave Kopay, who wrote a much-praised book years later.

In his book, Kopay referred to Jerry Smith without giving his name. Kopay wrote that Smith once came on to a young (white) player who was horrified and fought Smith off.

Smith was frightened by the incident, according to Kopay.

I dvr'd this program, but haven't watched it yet. I am astounded that they would devote an episode to one of the most underappreciated white players of all time, when almost every show is about a black player.

You are correct, although over 90% of the program is "on Smith's gayness." They do boost Smith for the HOF and mention his 60 TD receptions.

I have only seen clips of the film on Youtube but what I have found interesting is that the Redskins had a known homosexual on the team in Black fullback Ray Macdonald and Lombardi because of his gay brother wouldn't allow gay jokes about Macdonald.

I actually enjoyed this one despite the homosexual angle. Jerry Smith didn't seem like the type to shove his homosexuality down peoples throats. He was pretty private about his life outside of football and seemed like a decent person. Compare that to the homosexuals of today who won't shut up until you accept their behavior as normal, whether anyone likes it or not.

Those whose perspective is literally black and white with no shades or subtlety allowed, will not enjoy Sport Historian's posts as he is not always kneejerk "all white athletes are great, all black athletes are bad."

Younger posters could learn a lot from his knowledge, but some would rather bash him as a "troll." If you read his posts carefully, he is clearly pro-white athletes, but he does have a different opinion on certain white and black athletes than the consensus here. That's not a bad thing; I respect his knowledge and opinions even if I don't always agree with what he writes.

Here's an idea -- instead of instigating flame wars, just ignore Sport Historian's posts if you don't like them. He has a lot to offer; apparently certain posters are so all-knowing that they have no need to entertain a contrary viewpoint, but understand that some of us are interested in what Sport Historian has to say.
