Anybody surprised by this?

Art Shell coached the Raiders for just one season. In that season, he managed to set franchise records for losses and lowest points scored. It was the worst season for the Raiders since 1962.

The Raiders failed to score an offensive TD in eight games.
They allowed 72 sacks, the league worst.
The offense scored only 168 points, the 5th worst ever in a 16-game season.

The sad thing is, there isn't an easy remedy on the horizon. They need to jettison Aaron Brooks, bring in some offensive linemen, sign a decent quarterback, and hire a coach who can tell the difference between the game clock and the play clock.

Simple;he was the first black head coach hired,backj inthe '80s,he didn't do all that great in his tenure,but one season ( 1990 ) they managed to get all the way to the AFC championship,where they were hilariously slaughtered by Buffalo,51-3.Al obviously hired him in hoping to have,at least,some of that success again.

But,how do we know Al won't hire another one in his place?

Shell looked a zombie on the sidelines like Ray Rhodes did with Green Bay several years ago, totally out of his element a pure affirmative action hire who would be effective because he supposedlycommnaded respect. Even that wasnt so as many of his affaletes rebelled against him.

Shell comes from a different era in player-coach relations. Shell might have been a mediocre coach, but at least he wasn't willing to just look away every time the black players acted like fools. At his age, he's probably worried about how whites view blacks still; I doubt he's anything approaching colorblind, and didn't want his mostly black team embarssing him as a black coach. He had pride, hopefully.

I hope the job goes to Rob Ryan, as he at least was getting the defence into the games. They looked like they wanted to be there. Jim Mora's name was mentioned on NFL Network as well.

As to Shell being the first black NFL head coach... didn't the Hammond Pros in the 1920's have a black coach, Fritz Pollard?
