Well Annika has just won her third US open. In an 18 hole playoff, she cooly built an insurmountable lead on a classic course. Geez, here we are with the greatest female Athlete since Babe Didrikson and almost all we heard about this week was Michelle Wie! And unlike Babe Didrikson, Annika has class, good sportsmanship, and feminine grace! And unlike Michelle,Annika didn't start trying to compete inmen's tournaments until she had won everything on the women's tour. She is a true athlete looking for challenges and atrue Swedish Viking Queen (whorecently has become an American citizen)!

Annika, you are credit to your race, to your new and old countries!

Keep winning, and pass on your wisdom to the newer generation of great white women golfers---Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis, etc.!

Well said SK! It was non-stop Wie during the tournament coverage, but as usual she did not win. (Although she did play well for such a youngster). I don't dislike Wie personally just the cult the media has created around her.

Thanks, Jaxvid----and Idefinitely agree:Wieplayed well, andis ill-served by the cult statusalready given to her. One day she willbe afine LPGA golfer. Whether she will ever rank with Nancy Lopez and Annika, of course, remains to be seen.

This is a great site! I've been reading it for 5 months and I finally joined! Looking forward to fruitful exchanges with all. Peace and a Happy 4th of July to allCaste personnel and posters!

Tiger sent Annika a text message to let her know he won another major. From what I heard on the radio this morning, they have a 'friendly rivalry.'

I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, I'm slightly annoyed at what I perceive as Tiger's arrogance. On the other, it's good thing that Annika is finally getting some publicity. She has one less major than Tiger and hardly anyone outside of this site or the hardcore golf fans even know who she is. Too bad though that it took a comment from Tiger Woods to bring her a little fame.

Of course, if you Google this incident, the first article that comes up is about Michelle Wie, with the Tiger-Annika story a mere sidebar:

Tiger's Taunting Text
The results of last weekend's British Open were common knowledge. But just to be sure, Open champion Tiger Woods sent a text message to Annika Sorenstam to remind her he has once again eclipsed her in total major victories.

"I got one Sunday afternoon," Sorenstam said during a news conference before the Evian Masters. "It was a pretty smart comment, but this is to be expected, I guess, and deservingly so. He let me know that he won another major, in case I didn't know."

The exchange of text messages after major victories has become a tradition for the two. Woods has 11 career major championships to Sorenstam's 10.

Tiger has a lot of respect for Annika and it goes back a ways. So I think it is a friendly semi-needling remark as if to say "I'm back to being one-up on you, Annika." They are kindred spirits despite the racial and gender differences. They are both obsessed with winning and being the absolute best. They both see "the majors" as the ultimate test of golf greatness. If they do not win a major, they consider it a "disappointing" year.

The career of the greatest female golfer of all time ended quietly yesterday:

Sorenstam ends career with birdie at Dubai Ladies

It ended with a birdie, a standing ovation and a seventh-place finish for Annika Sorenstam, leaving the Hall of Fame golfer with no regrets after the final stroke of her career.

Wow, what a hush in the media about this, Don.

When Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman made an off-the-cuff "lynching" comment about Tiger Woods earlier this year, it became huge news and got her suspended for 2 weeks.

But when, as you say, "the greatest female golfer of all time" retired yesterday, the silence was almost deafening.

Anyway, thanks for the memories, Annika. You were a champion in every sense of the word.

the silence is very, very revealing about where the media's priorities lie...can't have a white nordic, even a white nordic woman, walk off--in glory-- into the sunset...let's get back to the real news,.... like Tiger's new commercial....
