he's 6'4 221. Fantuz is now sitting 6th in the league with 927 yards.

Well, he actually ran a 4.78 at the CFL combine, so it must be somewhere between...

either way, it doesn't matter. why do i say that? because Andy Fantuz is just another example of all the factors that are important for a receiver to have besides speed.
1)he can get open.
2)he catches the ball.
after those 2 vital ingredients for a receiver (which are sorely lacking in so many NFL "receivers"), he possesses other traits that are nice to have, as well, even if he isn't "blessed with sprinter speed."
he is tall.
he is strong.
he can jump well.
and yes, he is fast enough to stretch the field.
so it really doesn't matter what his actual 40 time is, because he is obviously fast enough. he is just a really good football player.
additionally, according to cfl.ca, 4 of the top 10 receivers in the CFL are white athletes. that includes DJ Flick who currently leads the league in TD catches, Ben Cahoon who leads the league in catches, and Andy Fantuz who leads the league (of those with 35 or more receptions) in yards per catch.

you're right on the spot JC. Being a football player, and a good one, is far form just being quick and fast.

absolutely, Gi-15.
the analogy i like to use is that speed is like icing on a cake. it certainly makes the cake better, but all by itself it is nearly worthless.
whereas you can have a really good cake without icing, you can have a really good football player who isn't a sprinter. conversely, a sprinter who can't play a lick doesn't do much good on the football field.
in the NFL and in "talent factory" Division I football schools, not only do we see loads of bad football players, in most cases the black afaletes aren't fast either.
so we're seeing the worst of both worlds, and being told it is "the best."

At one time football skills superseded speed. I don't know when it went the other way. Maybe in 78'? I do know this that pure sprinters were given ample opportunities in the NFL and all but one failed(Bob Hayes). Jimmy Hines, Renaldo Nemiah and friends were quickly sent packing because they couldn't run routes and catch the ball in traffic.
James Jett was another, a guy with great speed but who could only run in a straight line. The Steelers had a guy named Dwight Stone who was the same way except worse -- during their experiment with him as a starter, in back to back games he zipped past the d-backs,caught the bomb from the QBwith nothing but open field to the endzone -- and both times veered off to the right and out of bounds with no defender near him! It was infuriating and hilarious at the same time if you were a fan.

Cash's latest column hits the nail on the head about how Bob Hayes' success -- which was far from superstardom type results --was used as the pretext for replacing white receivers with black receivers whose only qualification was speed (and whose speedwas often embellished), eventually leading to a league of receivers who can't catch, just as wenow havethe endless experiments with quarterbacks who can't throw.

I don't think so, he may be a little darker, but he really has no face trait that lead me to believe he is part black.I dont know how you get a tan in saskatchewan at this time of the year, but to guy does it.
kinding. He looks a lot like Nick Going, I dont know your opinion of Going, i guess he is not considered white since no one talks about him..
