I've thought about it and I need to add Don Beebe to my list.

1) He did the most hilarious thing I've seen in the NFL when he stripped that Dallas dude about to score.
2) He feels the same as us about at least some of the discrimination against whites, and
3) In Tecmo Bowl he used to constantly catch 100+ yard passes from me.

So many of my favorites have already been named, but I'll list some childhood favorites who haven't yet been mentioned.

Kirk Gibson-All-American WR at Michigan State and superb baseball player. I'll never forget his 1988 World Series pinch hit HR while sick and injured. To me he was a great example of grit and determination. No matter how bad things look, keep going.

Orel Hershiser-The Bulldog had character and was a tremendous competitor. He got me interested in baseball in the late 80s.

Elliot Perry-We lived close to Memphis in 89 and 90 and I used to watch him play on TV. He was basketball's Urkel look-a-like. He was fairly short, skinny, and looked different than everyone else with his old fashioned high socks and goggles. He was had the underdog image that appealed to me at the time. Of course if he'd been White he'd have been the ultimate underdog.

Good call on Gibby. There are legendary stories about him at MSU, including one of the all-time best 40s (like 4.2) that he ran at Jenison Fieldhouse, and 360 dunks in intramural hoops.

Good one there I had forgotten. I always enjoyed watching him play, the epitome of a baseball player.

Dixie I like your list. The only problem is the Dorian Yates! 1st, how is body building a sport? More like a contestent show for men. 2nd, no respect for anyone who pumps in massive amount of roids to look like a freak. Today all the high end bodybuilders are freaks.

Come on, what eye to hand or leg corridination does one need to lift extreme amount of weights aided by roids? None. Just My opinion.

Good points. I guess Yates is my favorite bodybuilder of the "modern" era. In the pre-juice days, I think Roy "Reg" Park was my favorite.

Also, I meant to add legendary Georgia strongman Paul Anderson to the list.

Steve Young is far and away my favorite athlete. No one else even comes close.

My namesake also deserves an honorable mention

I'm surprised no one mentioned the greatest skater of all time - Eric Heiden. He's from Madison Wi. His German father and Slovene mother also produced a world class speed skating daughter. Heiden is still the most revered athlete in Holland from what I've read.
