Did anyone but me notice that McDrab, Leftover, Brotha Brooks,
Dulpepper and McScare all lost! And if Super Vick would have
played, he would have lost too. This is the part of the season
(when eveyone is in shape and game ready) that separates mediocracy
from true talent. Having a good to great defense will not be
enough to hide behing going into the second half of the season.
Yes Favre lost but God dam he almost pulled off a win while throwing to
a bunch of Afro fingered, gator armed bruthas. Oh way can't he get a
real clutch reciever black or white.

It was good to see, and the fact that Culpepper will be out for a while is decent news for us. I would hope we could find better usages of the English language than the Lord's name in vain though. There is no use for it.

I too take some offense when the Lord's name is used in vain.
Please explain to what means I have done that. Is not the Lord's
name: Jesus, Jehova, Emanuel, etc. God is a title. Even if
the title " God" was a name have I used did I use it to steer someone
wrong? Or have I used it to give a false Gospell? Or have I
used it for " Filthy Lucre"? No, I have used the title " God" but
it is not a name, just like CEO is not a name, nor is President.
But If I have offended you brother that was not my entent and I will
attempt to show some restraint with its usage in the future for
the spirit of communication and exchange of ideas. Incidently, if
you would like to dicuss symantics and Biblical issues related to
Salvation through faith, it would be my pleasure.

and you can add Anthony Wright last night--missed wide open receivers constantly--takes a sack with no TO's and no time

can you IMAGINE how good the Ravens would be with a white QB?

It's not just offensive to me as a Christian, it has no logical use in the English language. It makes no sense to demand God to damn something or someone(it usually sound like a demand rather than a request). Saying it without a demand on the end makes even less sense, as if someone is saying it because they can't think of anything more appropriate to use, or just because they want to blaspheme God. We aren't supposed to take the Lord's name in vain ever, not just based on those conditions you mention above-Exodus 20:7,Leviticus 19:12. To Christians, the name God can refer to any part of the Trinity, so it is not a title. It may be to people of other religions or to atheists, but not to us. That is why I differentiate between god and God. If you don't believe in God, I guess saying His name in vain means nothing, as it is just another word. Although it does show that they acknowledge God and that sometimes they enjoy saying it in front of Christians just to make them feel bad. There are many euphemisms for God that are used every day by many people that are just as bad, ex. golly, gosh, geez, etc. As far as semantics go, I know who can't spell it.

It is much more offensive than the "f-word" or any other curse word in my opinion. There is no reason for the other words to be offensive. The bible says not to curse someone. It didn't say anything about foul language.

Well Col if we take all the commandments (10) including not to
blaspheme God or the law from the Old testament and attempted to gain
eternal life from them we will be cursed and would fail.
"For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse." Gal
3:10 Again, I apologize for offending you with the term "G.. dam
it" and will refrain from using it in the future. However, please
examine your own faith and make sure it is on a solid foundation of
Grace and not of works (doing something, or not doing something to
merit favor from Christ) Indeed Ephesians 2:8 says " For by
grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the
gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." And last
but not least Christ himself said in Matthew 12:31" All manner of sin
and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men." Please excuse my
spelling.

"Deo Vindice"

If my Latin serves me, this means "God Delivers".

I assume this phrase does not signify God competes with UPS, rather that God presumably delivers one from one's enemies, especially when one has plentiful ammo on hand.

This does not seem far removed from exhorting a diety to damn an enemy, especially since being "delivered" from enemies oft involves perforating them with projectiles.

Not being a nicey-nice sort of guy, I see nothing particularly evil about requesting a little of the brimstone, flies, or frog treatment be rained upon certain charachters, albeit in real life this is the sort of chore one will almost certainly have to do oneself.

I understand however, that most people do not use this phrase "God Damn" in its literal meaning, and the watering down of English's wonderful stock of profanities by overuse IS a concern to those of us who love the language.Edited by: White_Savage

Nice post Savage. I will argue further that many people evoke the
name of God to deliver them from creditors, rioters,
deadbeat/stalker husbands, despot rulers etc. One may say G.d Dam
it, G.d forbid, G.d save us (by any means possible) for example.
Whatever the phrase or wording, the heart or thought is more or less
the same. That is the crux, Christ knows the inner heart and
meaning. The words we use are incapable of covering the true
self. So the Col and others may never say G.d Dam it, but
he may think it. And should someone ever cut the Col off in
traffic, or brake in his home I'm sure the first thing that comes to
his mind is not praise God!

This is one of the more entertaining threads -- some people come back periodically to the title subject while othersare engaged ina lively side discussion. Additionally, a troll decided tomake his presence known.

Actually Colonel, Culpepper's pathetic play every week was better news for us. And I do think The Vikings will play better with Brad Johnson.

White_Savage, Deo Vindice means God will vindicate, and I take that to mean both that in the end He will be vindicated and that he will vindicate in the end. It is totally removed from what we have been discussing, but I think I know where you are coming from. I actually discussed the meaning of that signature months ago with several people on this board. I don't remember if you were one of them or not.

Spooge, you are correct about people trying to follow the 10 Commandments for salvation. It is impossible to follow them perfectly, so salvation by works alone is impossible. That is an issue I am confronted with on a daily basis in this mormon land. You are also correct that many people do use it over nothing, and that is partially why it offends me so much. It is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. I guarantee you I don't think that word when people pull in front of me in traffic. What I do think or say is, are you crazy or what are you doing. I assure you I ain't close to perfect, but I don't think things like that about people. If my house was broken into, the first thing I'd think or say is where's my gun.

GWTG, since you decided to jump on the "dump on Colonel Reb" bandwagon, I hope you realize/remember that Culpepper was the NFL leader in passing yardage last year. I say its better to have him on the sideline than on the field. I'd rather see a white QB any day, considering the amount of discrimination most white NFL players experience.

Colonel, not jumping on anything here. I have no interest in participating in any religious discussions on this board. I'm just saying that it was fun to see the true Culpepper come out this year. Besides, what are we going to do on this site, root for every black athlete to get injured until a white guy replaces him.
I ask you, what is more fun, Vick getting injured for the year and having the media gush about what the Falcons could have been with him or watching him play his way to the lowest QB rating in the NFL and see the negative comments from the media slowly start to creep out about him. The latter makes for much better discussion and helps make our case here. Plus it is just plain fun to watch these affirmative action QB's implode.

Well said GWTJ, having brothers on the field and screwing up is much
preferred to them on the sidelines getting camera shots.
One of the few pleasures gained from watching the NFL (Negro For Life)
is the cognitive schism verbalized by the commentators when a brother
misses a pass, throws up a duck or afro fingers (drops a pass in
coverage) balls. I often hear statements such as: " Oh, that pass
was perfect, if only the receiver would have been there" or " He could
have caught that if there wasn't so much coverage" or " did you see how
far he threw that pass out of bounds!, what a great throw", etc.
Joe Thiesman and Maguire make these ellusions often during
Bizzaro world NFL.

Did you catch John Madden after Baltimore's attempt at a flea flicker on Monday night? It was an awful throw, straight up in the air and at least 15 yards short of where it should have gone. The Ravens receiver and Steelers safety Chris Hope just stood there and waited for it to come down. Afterwards Madden was raving about how Hope hadn't bitten on the fake and stayed in coverage. He had nothing to say about Anthony Wright's terrible pass, one of many poor throws he made during the game that went unremarked upon by Madden and Michaels.

I'm glad to see Vick stinking it up, and I'm glad Culpepper is on the sidelines. How many times have we complained about the growing number of black QB's? I say, if one of them gets hurt and has to ride the bench, good for us. It gives a white player a chance to perform. If a black QB can't hit the broad side of a barn, and gets negative comments about it, good for us. We know from the Slash Stewart example that these mediocre or worse black QB's can keep their jobs almost indefinitely, so I think that if one gets hurt, it does more for us in the long run. It keeps the number of starting white QB's up, and eventually those injuries will translate into retirement. I don't think Steve McNair has too many more starts left in his battered body. If so many people are blind to the way commentators cover for black's mistakes, how can it help us? The only way I see that it could is by blacks realizing that they can't be good QB's, and then talking about it in front of whites, as someone on another thread mentioned yesterday. Most whites are so slow to criticize blacks these days, I don't see how they will change much, unless they hear black people putting down the Vicks of the world.

Most whites will not criticize " people of color" because they have
been succesfully indoctrinated into inculturalcide, ethnicide,
politicide and social-pyscho infanticide. The transition is
complete and the screw turners can move foward with their agenda (no
the tin foil is not too tight on my head). The pacification
process produced a quasi sub sexual male of the cacasoid species.
The mock macho stud female myth has induced a stupified response from
Joe America (anyone witness " Alias" lately?), displaying a vasilative quivering
mass of mental goo, unable to evoke a response in the affirmative for
his kind while watching endless hours of fictional dramatica.

As to the actual topic of the thread.... There seems to be a few black 'althletic' Qb's comming out of the draft in the next couple of years(Young, Jacobs, Smith etc)... Will they be recievers, Quaterbacks, Returners or Bench Warmers do you think?
