This guy hits like a ton of bricks! Every punch he lands flush seems to hurt every opponent. You can see by their body language how hard this guy punches.

It's fascinating to me how similar a lot of the European fighters are. I find myself thinking the same things when I watch their fights. Huck, Baysangurov, Alexeev, even Abraham: very big punchers with a basic "shell" defense. When they're in predator mode, they are devastating. But when the opponent fires back, they have some issues. Alexeev got in trouble against Alvarez in the third round. What did he do? At first, he just stood there and covered up. Then he moved away enough to survive, but he didn't even clinch! Then again, defense is a question mark with every prospect. In his most recent fight against Griffis, he would step back and block straight rights with his left hand. That was good to see, albeit against a very limited opponent.

Overall, he's a very talented, promising prospect. Edited by: JD074

Boy, can he punch! And it was nice to see an opponent press the action a little bit; Alexeev responded well.

Alexander Alexeev will be fighting Victor Emilio Ramirez for the "interim" WBO title on Jan 17.

The winner this fight gets to face the winner of Banks vs. Maccarinelli for the regular WBO title.

So Alexeev now has his opportunity!

This is no false compliment: Alexeev fights like a pro. He looks like he has had a long apprenticeship in the amateurs which is always a great thing. This is Alexander Alexeev:
-6'2", Southpaw, 16-0 (15ko).
-Very physically strong, but loose and relaxed and has viscious knockout power.
-Tough, determined, and relentless with intense concentration.
-Technically sound and light on his feet, really good side-steps either direction.
-Can fight long and close range, tall and short fighters at either stance.
-Defense is mostly blocking and parrying but slips well and slips for counters.

He does need to throw more volume, specifically more volume in combinations, which is a remnant from his amateur career where single and double shots are mostly used. He also needs to develop a more sophisticated side attack. He is though, a very solid contender in the cruiserweight division. I would probably take him to beat Maccarinelli now.

He could possibly be better than Adamek as well.He could be very dominant in cruiserweight. Also Adamek is set to face BJ Flores on March 21st in Newark NJ. This is the same place the fight was last time. I plan on being there again.

Alexeev lost today. From fightnews:

"In the first huge shocker of 2009, highly touted cruiserweight hope Alexander Alekseev was stopped by unknown Argentinian Victor Emilio Ramirez after nine hard-fought rounds for the WBO interim cruiserweight title. Alekseev started well, keeping the distance and outboxing Ramirez in the first couple rounds. The Argentinian, however, managed to get some hard shots in at times while marching forward with bulldog-like aggression. The tide turned in the sixth when Alekseev got caught by some big body shots and was wobbled. The Russian came back in the seventh with a body shot himself that stunned Ramirez. Afterwards, it was the Argentinian who bullrushed Alekseev around the ring and connected with hard shots in the eight before wobbling the Spotlight fighter around the ring in the ninth, scoring with huge shots that had Alekseev out of his feet. The Russian was not able to get the momentum back and was almost down at the end of the round, eating punches in bunches. After the ninth, the corner of the Russian decided it was enough and threw in the towel, making it a tenth round TKO victory for the underog Victor Emilio "El Tyson del Abasto" Ramirez. Suffering his first career loss, Alekseev falls to 16-1. Scoring the big upset, Ramirez moves to 14-1 with 12 KOs, capturing the WBO interim belt."

I'm not giving up on him yet, I still think Alexeev can win a title or two.

Agreed. One loss, especially this early on, does nothing to derail a prospect, and most will tell you it's probably the best thing that could have happened to a young prospect at this time.

Well it sucks that Alexeev lost (I had high hopes for him based on what other people said) but this website looks awesome!

Tough break for Alexeev. He may have to go back and drop another five or six fighters in a row to get back to where he was. The only explanation I can think of is his relatively lack of pro experience and he may not have conditioned his body enough to survive a body attack. In the amateurs the body punches are not very important and perhaps he overlooked defending against them out of habit -he was an amateur star as we know. Again, that is "the old trade" where a body shot is worth as much as a head shot. I still like Alexeev and he is still going to win a lot of fights.

The fight reminded me of the Huck loss to Cunningham. I think his body hit the wall from pounding the easily hittable Argentine. The rugged Argentine reminded me of a bigger Juan Roldan with less skills. He needs learn better pace judgement.

Cruiserweight Alexander Alexeev (16-1, 15 KOs) lost a challenge for the WBO interim cruiserweight title and his unbeaten record via TKO to Victor Emilio "El Tyson del Abasto" Ramirez (14-1, 12 KOs) last Saturday. In an exclusive interview with Fightnews.com, Alekseev tells us what happened.

Alexander, what was the reason for your defeat?

It's a lot of reasons. I was not in the best physical form. I had good tactics in the fight, I was winning on points, I was in command. I don't know what happened to me in the ring.

What you can tell us about Ramirez?

Nothing special. Before the fight we had studied him very well. He's a very strong-willed boxer. That's what rescued him.

None of your previous fights had lasted more than six rounds. Did that affect you?

When I leave the ring, I want to win by knockout. But in the fight against Ramirez, I wasn't adjusted from the very beginning. I had good tactics and can't say that I was physically tired, simply in the final rounds I couldn't do what I wanted.

Who made decision not to come out for the tenth round?

It wasn't me. I was able fight on further, but my trainer told me that it is better not to risk it and I obeyed.

After the fight, Ramirez said he's ready to give to you rematch in Argentina. You agree?

Yes, I'd be fine that the fight take place in Argentina. He came to Germany to fight in my territory, now I'm ready to fight in his territory. It's only fair.

You think this rematch will take place in the near future?

Not right away. It's necessary to wait for his fight against Enzo Maccarinelli, then it will be possible to speak about rematch.

Will you continue to work with trainer Fritz Zdunek?

Yes, he wants to, and I do too.

When are you coming back to Russia?

In a week. First it's necessary to resolve my affairs in Germany.

Alexeev returns this Saturday in Germany. His opponent will be Kendrick Releford 20-12-2(10). The durable Releford has been the distance with many top fighters including some heavyweights and has only been stopped once in his twelve losses.
