Mike Ilitch.. the guy who founded Little Caesars, has been a good sports franchise owner. Bought the Red Wings after they were consistently missing the postseason thru the 70s & into the early 80s, and has overseen their transformation into a dominant franchise.. I think he also owns the Tigers now, but can't really speak on how he's been a baseball owner (?) I believe he's also an active local philanthropist around Detroit..
& obviously, Little Caesars isn't four star dining.. but you can't beat a large pie for 5 bucks. Even frozen pizzas typically cost that much or more. He's got a good restaurant chain & empire. izza:

According to some sources he's Jewish, but I don't think so, he seems like too good of a man to be. He supports non-Jewish charities, and I've never known wealthy Jewish people to do so, although they are very generous to their own people. Here's his Forbes profile:

I don't think Ilitch is jewish but I checked on the web and some say he is, others say he is an Orthodox Christian. He is one of those old school Americans, from America 1.0 that built a business empire through his own hard work. Ilitch played minor league baseball for the Tigers and when he hit it big with his pizza empire he became a big supporter of youth hockey. As a kid I played for a team he sponsored which would not be unusual as he almost highhandedly supported the sport locally amongst kids back in the 1970-80's.

His association with hockey and his growing fortune led to an opportunity to eventually purchase the Detroit Red Wings. The transfer in ownership from the Norris family to the Ilitch family was a shot in the arm for hockey in Detroit. The Norris family had run the franchise into the ground. Ilitch resurrected it with a very heavy influx of foreign talent from Europe, first the old USSR and then Sweden. The Red Wings pioneered the importation of European talent into the NHL. Perhaps Ilitch experience with youth hockey helped. Ilitch also created a home-away from home for the foreign players, who, to this day remember fondly their time in the Detroit area. (not many other people would say the same!).

Ilitch has been a very big supporter of Detroit and the many failed attempts to revive it through casino's, stadiums, restaurants, etc. The only hospitable area in the city of Detroit is around the area Ilitch has invested millions--Comerica Park, The Fox Theater, Greek Town Casino and many restaurants and clubs.

As he got richer he purchased the Tigers and has turned them into a winner with his bottomless checkbook. Unfortunately he has used the same style of ownership to revive the Tigers--buying mostly foreign talent. Virtually the entire starting line-up is from Venezuela, or black. Very unusual for most teams outside of the Yankees.

Ilitch's attempt to buy a World Championship has not worked out so far. Despite one of the highest payrolls in baseball the team has fallen short the past few years. Illitch is old, 84 and seems to be in frail health. The window for him to live to see a WS winner is getting narrow. What happens when his kids take over is another story. Like the kids of many rich people they are considered idiots.

Illitch will never be able to own the Lions, they are owned by the Ford family and that will never change. It's doubtful he will ever own the Pistons either. The Pistons were just sold to another multi-billionaire and they anchor a sports and entertainment conglomerate located in the suburbs. When he passes the kids will never be savvy enough to keep the empire together. They'll be lucky to run the Red Wings and Tigers at a profit.
