There is a boxing saying that a good big man will beat a good little man. Another one that I recall reading in Sports Illustrated in the early 70's is that "a good black man will always beat a good white man." This was part of an argument that a white heavyweight champion would never appear again, an argument that failed to hold true.

As a young boxing fan back then, it sure seemed that way to me at the time. The sixties and seventies were dismal times for white boxing. That's why I'm really enjoying the present white revival.

We're back, and better than ever.

Spike Lee said something similar in the late 80s or early 90s. James Toney even said something similar in 2005, when 2 of the 4 heavyweight champs were white. Where Charles Murray and Richard Herrnstein got their ideas for The Bell Curve I'll never know.

But, of course, blacks are never called on their racism and buffoonery. Must be white skin privilege.

I think the adage is now: A good black man will NEVER beat a decent white man, and a poor black man will get his ass kicked by ANY white man!!!

Yes James Toney made some racist comments that there will never be a white heavyweight champion. He also said something about blacks being the toughest.

I used to hear back in the 70s that blacks had thick skins, ape like long arms, and heads as tough as coconuts. That, of course, was why they supposedly dominated boxing back then.

Reality tells a much different story, of course. Anyone with a protruding facial bone structure can cut; and whites -not blacks- have the edge in toughness by far. In fact, would you believe that of Bert Sugar's top 20 toughest fighters of all time 19 were white. He gave the number one spot to Hagler though I do not know why. When we think of the toughest fighters of all time we always think of whites, ie: Chuvalo, Marciano, Zale, Monzon, Vitali Klitschko, etc.
Blacks do have a slightly longer reach and thinner bones than whites on average so if they play pitty-pat boxing they stand an advantage to win on points.
Now power, that is clearly, and I mean clearly, a white advantage most of the time. Short, compact punches carry more power. And that is a fact.

When Ali was beating up on club fighters and their was only Quarry near the top of the division it was easy to believe that crap. What moron would think that Jean Pierre Coopman, Richard Dunn or Chuck Wepner were the greatest white athletes available. Only people that wanted to believe that nonsense.

OMG, I lived through it my friend. Coopman was called the Lion of Flanders. Dunn I don't think was the Lion of anything. Wepner was lyin' when he said he once ducked a punch. I'd watch them fight and wonder is this the best we can come up with?

Duane Bobick gave me some hope, then got crushed in the Olympics and lost all his big fights as a pro. European fighters got no respect. American fighters (which meant black) considered fighting in Europe, including the night of the fight, a vacation. The Bobick-Norton disaster, among others. If you wasn't there I can tell you thems was hard times kids.

Makes things nowadays even sweeter.

I understand that there is some instrument that measures the power of a fighter's punch. When I read about it--quite a while back--Tommy Morrison rated as the most powerful puncher the device had identified.

I'm wondering if anybody knows the name of the machine. Thanks.

Good point, one that is never made in the MSM. If the black fighters from the good ol days were so good why was their white competition so poor? C'mon Wepner, Dunn, Tex Cobb? Those guys weren't even good athletes, they were just punching bags. The only real athlete-Cooney went right to the top before flaming out. Quarry was good but he never weighed more then 200 lbs.!

All fighters come out of the ghetto. There are no white ghettos in America, except in Hollywood fantasy land. Where were the gyms the white fighters were going to come from? In surburbia??? Yeah sure, I can see it now "boxing moms" dragging their kids to the gym to get their faces pounded so some day they can get a scholorship to State U in boxing?!?

East Europeans got it hard, they got gyms in tough parts of town that turn out angry kids willing to take a beating to earn some cash. At the rate our economy is going and the way white people are getting beat down look for some good US white fighters in the future.

JaxVid, ol' Tex Cobb wasn't a great athlete, but he was one of the toughest mugs to ever step in the ring! Ol' Andre the Giant sure handed Wepner his @$$ as well!

Oh boy, I remember those horrendous times. I'm glad some of the younger folks here did not have to live through those dark ages in boxing. In a lot of respects Ali was the Tiger Woods for a good portion of the era. Fighting the likes of Dunn or Wepner only reinforced every notion of black superior athleticism triple-fold. Recently, I heard a caller to a radio program, who apparently became hard wired by the events of the time, wish for the good old days of boxing. He and the host of the program went on to disparage Wlad. Somehow it was a negative that he had a Ph.D. Conclusion, boxing is better when the fighters are black and uneducated.

DD, I love Tex Cobb! I need to find some of his quotes to post here--he was one funny dude. Never seemed stupid to me, either, even though in his TV and film career he seemed to always be portrayed as so. Just a decent white dude, so far as I've figured.

Unfortunately, Cobb couldn't punch.

I'm glad I live in a time when white fighters hold their own. Too bad they don't get much respect. I'm going to have to get posters and t-shirts of Adamek, Calzaghe, Vitali, and Wlad so people ask who they are. Unfortunately, boxing in my age group in the Northeast is not very popular. I would imagine because it is "boring" and there is "no competition." Lewis owned Holyfield in the 90s and many other boxers. He won against Vitali on luck and got his ass handed to him. Lewis's face looked so scared. Vitali is the best boxer in history. I hope Wlad brings some attention to the sport this June 20th by killing Haye.

I'm not picking at your post, but white fighters are more than holding their own. White fighters are now dominating middle to heavy.

Yeah, I like Tex too! He's got a great personality and his movie roles are hilarious. But I hated to watch him fight. He would take punch after punch after punch. Man it was terrible to watch. And he could really take a beating too so it would go on and on. He was a walking stereotype for the white punching bag. If only he would have had some KO power.

Cobb made Larry Holmes wear out his fists in their 1981 title fight. Howard Cosell stopped doing boxing matches in disgust after that fight. Cobb claims making Cosell quit boxing as one of the proudest moments in his career.
