Brett Sodetz, 7, Golfs Better Than You
If you don't mind waiting 11 years for your next golf prodigy, dive into the story of Brett Sodetz with me.
Sodetz is your typical 7-year-old, complete with missing teeth and the shaggy hair. The only difference between him and any other child is that Sodetz is on his way to golf stardom, and he knows it.<A name=cont></A>
In late December, Brett won the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship at Pinehurst, N.C. by shooting seven-under par on a course measuring about 1,300 yards. Sodetz weighs only about 50 pounds, so the fact that he can drive the ball 150 yards while navigating a decently long track for children is quite impressive.
The story about Brett and his parents' hope for a great golfer is fairly interesting, if not intense. His dad, Steve, gave him his first set of clubs when he was 18 months. When they realized his ability, the parents picked up and moved the family to Las Vegas so Brett would have the ability to golf all year, getting him set up with an instructor by the name of Trevor Derrhein.
The family is spending $20,000 a year on his golf, which might seem a touch extreme until you realize that they are also getting the kid involved in other activities such as soccer, baseball, tae kwon do, advanced math and Spanish. His parents seem to be borrowing from the Earl Woods theory of "allowing your child to have a life outside of golf" so that he doesn't burn out.
