Since 2007, the Miners have started 10, 9, 5, 5, 4, 2, 3, 8, 5, 5, 3, 1, 0, 5, 4, 4, 4, 2, and 4 whites. In 2026, they are projected to start 3.
The Miners are a basement-dwelling team inConference USA Mountain West. They were last bowl-eligible in 2021.
There really isn’t much to write about. Head coach Scotty Walden brought in two new black quarterbacks via the transfer portal. Altogether, they will have 11 new transfer starters, with well-traveled DT Preston Hickey the sole white player among them. Returning starter Jayden Wilson will be the weakside linebacker.
UTEP competes with somewhere between 5-7 other schools in Texas alone with bigger program budgets. Instead of trying a different roster formula, they are drawing from the same well of sub-par black players, just with a smaller ladle.
