It's being held at Aronimink Golf Club just outside Philadelphia, a private country club and one of several great golf courses in eastern Pennsylvania, built by and for Old Money. Nothing wrong with that, I would take those wealthy men -- who still had a connection to and who cared about and felt a duty toward the country in which they prospered -- in a heartbeat over today's cosmopolitan anti-American, anti-human robber barons. The only other time Aronimink hosted the PGA was in 1962, when Gary Player won the first of his two PGA titles.

The defending champion is Scottie Scheffler, who has placed second in his last three tournaments, and is the betting favorite to repeat, followed by Rory McIlroy, Cam Young, Jon Rahm, Ludvig Aberg, Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, and Brooks Koepka. Koepka was the last to go back to back, winning in '18 and '19 and then again in '23, his only major since his great run in the majors in the late teens.

After three rounds this may be the most congested leaderboard ever for a major. Fully 22 players are within four shots of the leader, an unknown named Alex Smalley who has never won a PGA event. He's at -6.

Some notables in the thick of contention:

Jon Rahm: -4
Ludvig Aberg: -4
Rory McIlroy: -3
Xander Schauffele: -3
Patrick Reed: -3
Justin Rose: -2
Cameron Smith: -2
Chris Gotterup: -2

Scottie Scheffler, Sam Burns, Brooks Koepka and Ricki Fowler are among those at -1. Cam Young and Justin Thomas are even par. Should be quite the battle tomorrow.

My money is on Rahm or Rory; however, rooting for Justin Rose. Rahm has something to prove w. LIV in a free fall and his game being questioned. Scheffler's ball striking is amazing but he needs to convert and make putts. If he does he will be right there.

I would be very happy to see Rose win. It was at Merion in the same vicinity of eastern PA where he won the U.S. Open in 2013. At his age he doesn't have many chances left to win another major.

Rory or Scottie winning would also be very satisfying.

I like Rahm's game but wasn't a fan of his ditching the PGA Tour for silly money on LIV when he was already making more money than he could spend. There's a lot to be said for tradition and legacy, especially in golf, and to me all the players who signed with LIV are greedy.
