Since 2006, NIU has started 11, 11, 14, 12, 11, 7, 7, 9, 6, 8, 10, 9, 10, 7, 10, 9, 8, 10, and 10 white players. In 2026, they are starting 7.

The Huskies, currently of the Mountain West Conference, are led by white first-time (interim) head coach Rob Harley. Harley played safety for Ohio State from 2001-2005, initially as a walk-on. The program was put in the lurch this past February when the previous head coach left to become the running backs coach for the Seattle Seahawks. That should give you an idea of this program’s budget and prestige levels. The roster has no shortage of D2, D3, and even JUCO up-transfers.

True freshman Jack Murray has taken over starting MIKE duty. Brady Kerperin, who was playing for Iowa Western Community College last year, had 11 tackles this past weekend (1.5 TFL). His season total last year in the community college league was 25.

WR Dimopoulos is listed as a starter but has just 6 catches through 4 games.

Pretty certain starting safety Liam Lindo is mixed, so not counting him here.

This is one of the worst programs in D1. I can sympathize knowing that any standout player will be immediately poached by a richer NIL suitor, as Murray will likely be. And hey, salute the snow plow!

Starters:
WR: George Dimopoulos
OL: Ross Liegel, Luke Skartvedt, Landon Hron, Tyler Chambers, Lane Mahnesmith

LB: Jack Murray

Backups:
QB: Bradley Davidson (3rd string)
WR: Kelan McInerney
TE: Glen Weber
OL: Ben Gustafson, Jacob Welch

LB: Brady Kerperin, Cooper Mau, Broderick Windham

Nice write up!

Hard to fathom Northern Illinois is now in the Mountain West....Absurd ! they are teetering on FCS status like a few other schools; they should TRADE places with new FBS Sacramento State who's in the MAC . Cant make this stuff up!

The move to MWC baffles me. I’ve seen other CFB fans mention the MAC may be close to collapsing.
