Since 2006, Illinois has started 11, 8, 5, 4, 4, 6, 8, 10, 8, 10, 10, 6, 5, 6, 8, 5, 4, 6, and 7 white athletes. They project to start 10 in 2026 (pus some significant rotation).

Bret Bielema has quietly become one of the Big Ten’s (and by extension, the P4’s) most white-friendly coaches, at least for now.

QB Katin Houser returns to the conference after a two-year stop at East Carolina.

Aidan Laughery is almost a co-starter and should see at least 1/3 of the running back touches.

Slot receiver Hudson Clement had a 36-454-3 stat line last year and could improve on that.

Illinois State transfer WR Eddie Kasper will return punts.

There are five white defenders slated to start, and CB Tanner Heckel featured heavily last year already as a nickel back of sorts (37 tackles, 3 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 1 INT).

A fair amount of these white starters were backups last year, so Bielema deserves credit for not recruiting over his own guys with transfer mercenaries. There’s more white depth on both sides of the ball should this trend continue.
