Since 2005, Cal has started 7, 7, 11, 6, 8, 9, 6, 5, 8, 8, 7, 10, 11, 9, 12, 12, 6, 9, 6, and 8 white players. This year, they are starting 3, an all-time low.
New first-time head coach Tosh Lupoi, a Mormon Polynesian, has a robust resume as a defensive coach, but he’s shown very little interest in playing/recruiting white athletes. There are 12 new starters from the transfer portal plus a true freshman, so plenty of “coach’s touch” on this lineup. For reference, Cal has four Polynesian starters (and more players on the depth chart than the number of white backups).
Former nominal starting WR Mark Hamper has been demoted and has played in only 2 of 5 games so far this season.
Colorado State transfer QB Jackson Brousseau, himself a Mormon, did not supplant the younger, incumbent Polynesian sophomore during training camp.
The only reason to check the box score is for starting slot Cooper Perry, an Oregon transfer (Lupoi was Dan Lanning’s DC at Oregon last year and brought a handful of Ducks along with him). Thus far, he’s the 7th leading receiver on the team. TE Mason Mini is fourth with just 12 receptions through 5 games.
RB Carson Perry-Smith is listed as 4th on the depth chart. He has just one touch on the season, but it was a 53 yard touchdown reception in a competitive game.
There are zero white defenders listed on the entire Ourlads depth chart! I can't remember the last time I've written up a team with that distinction.
Starters:
Slot: Cooper Perry
C: Bastian Swinney
TE: Mason Mini
Backups:
QB: Jackson Brousseau
RB: Carson Perry-Smith
WR: Mark Hamper
TE: Dorian Thomas
OL: Ashton Rivera, Michael Kristiewicz
