Since 2005, Virginia Tech has started 5, 5, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7, 8, 7, 5, 6, 5, 5, 4, 6, and 6 white players. In 2023, they project to start 6.
West Virginia native Grant Wells returns as the starting quarterback. He had a pedestrian 2022 season but should benefit from experience. The Gosnell brothers will compete for a bit of playing time and targets. Older brother Stephen is slated to start in four-receiver sets. He started his career at UNC but transferred to play with his younger brother Benji, who's already the backup TE as a redshirt freshman.
Track phenom and speed demon Cole Beck doesn't seem to have a position on the field but should be a formidable kick returner. By himself, he's worth checking the box score for this otherwise very unimpressive roster. Bryce Duke also returned kicks last year and continues to claw his way up the RB depth chart.
The defense remains remarkably black. None of the backups I've listed are guaranteed much playing time. The next three QB's on the roster are also black.
Starters:
QB: Grant Wells
WR: Stephen Gosnell
OT: Brody Meadows, Parker Clements
OG: Bob Schick
TE: Nick Gallo
KR: Cole Beck, Bryce Duke
PR: Tucker Holloway
Backups:
RB: Bryce Duke (4th on depth chart as sophomore)
WR: Tucker Holloway
OL: Johnny Garrett, Jack Hollifield, Layth Ghannam (half-Egyptian), Tyler Smedley
TE: Benji Gosnell
DT: Gunner Givens
LB: Will Johnson
S: Luke Bussel, Tyler Childress
