For anyone interested. The Golf Channel will be airing the 1986 Masters at 7:00. That's the one Jack Nicklaus won at age 46 for his record sixth Green Jacket. I thought it would be a great watch before the Rams game.

An obscure player named Sam Ryder makes an ace at the famous 16th hole in the third round today of the Phoenix Open, now called the Waste Management Open, and watch the reaction. This clip is 3 minutes long and it's definitely worth watching the whole thing. If you think golf galleries are reserved you never will again after seeing this true DWF moment:

That is truly what spectator sports is about. An athlete performs a feat of skill, and a gallery of fans appreciates and enjoys the event. No politics, social justice, propaganda, BLM, or other ********.

After watching that Waste Management is an appropriate name for the tournament.

And following up what icsept said, it is a pure sporting moment. It’s also nice seeing a group of (mostly) White people having fun together. That’s not really encouraged anymore in the USSA.

Sam Burns successfully defends his Valspar championship, making a long putt on the second playoff hole for the win. He also won earlier this year and now has 3 PGA Tour wins and moves into the top ten in the world rankings.

I like Burns, he has a lot of confidence without coming across as arrogant, and has a great all-around game. He was right in the hunt last week at The Players so his future looks very bright.

Texan Scottie Scheffler wins the prestigious WGC Match Play Championship in Austin. He's now won three of the past five PGA tournaments and, surprisingly to those who haven't followed golf closely the last few months, now displaces Jon Rahm as the number one ranked player in the world. Rahm had been number one for the past 36 weeks.

Scheffler finished runner-up in the Match Play Championship last year and was a captain's pick on last year's Ryder Cup team, so he's not an unknown but he's greatly increased his profile of late. He's only 25 years old so should have many good years ahead of him.

What’s with Mickelson skipping the Masters? Was the whole Saudi thing that big a deal? Man he doesn’t have many chances remaining.

Scheffler is on fire. He can do it all, but I’m pretty sure he can walk around anonymously. I would criticize the PGA for not adequately marketing its players, but other than Mickelson and Woods, their stars haven’t been able to sustain success.

Wonderful, now Rich Lerner & Co. get another chance to ruin a major for the 95% of golf fans who don't spend their every waking moment fantasizing about Woods:

The United States Golf Association (USGA) announced Thursday that Tiger Woods has registered to play in the 2022 U.S. Open June 16-19 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Woods is among the 48 fully exempt players to have registered for the 122nd U.S. Open, one of 12 past champions to enter. Woods is exempt based off his Masters victory in 2019.

I guess Woods is not playing the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa this May. It’s a hilly, long, tough course to walk. I plan on going to the Tuesday practice rounds. No Woods means cheaper tickets and fewer normies.

Was just driving to take care of some chores and the topic of conversation on Mark Madden's radio sports show (Madden was off, it was guest hosted today by Tim Benz) was the "all Tiger all the time" coverage of The Masters by CBS, which was being criticized by Benz and also by callers. Just as I figured, there's a lot of us out there disgusted by how the media has turned the washed-up 46 year old who's won but one major in 14 years, into an idol in the most blasphemous sense of the word. A recent column by Phil Mushnick of The New York Post was mentioned, which I looked up and it's right on point. Here's the relevant part about The Masters and CBS (he leaves out Rich Lerner and the Golf Channel, who are magnitudes worse than CBS when it comes to Tiger worship):

MLB, Masters coverage hit embarrassing new lows with on-air commentary

Then there was the CBS/ESPN coverage of the Masters — the most insulting, dishonest and maudlin presentation ever applied to a televised golf major. If you didn’t know better — and everyone attached to those telecasts did, but chose to treat us like drooling fools — you’d have thought Tiger Woods was a returning war hero, severely wounded in action.

Thus we were involuntary participants in a religious retreat, a four-day worship service. “What a friend we have in Ti-ger!”

You wouldn’t know that “Tiger’s miraculous comeback” (Dottie Pepper several times) and “extraordinary courage” (everyone, all the time) was fully caused by his own rank negligence.

Or was it insignificant that this profile in courage was the result of Woods’ inability to stay awake while driving a car, once leading to his arrest for being wasted on opioids, the second time to police ignoring the first time by not investigating why he flipped his car at nearly twice the speed limit and was discovered unconscious?

Had a guy named Joe returned to his job as a welder or window washer after such episodes — forget that Woods had often previously been treated by a doctor flown in from Canada, one who’d be convicted of dispensing illegal and mislabeled drugs, though Woods denies any use — the CBS/ESPN crews would have admired Joe’s courage or shaken their heads in disgust?

Yet even as Scottie Scheffler putted out on 18 to win the Masters, Jim Nantz continued to chant his adulation of Woods, who’d finished 23 shots back (but was the leader among those tied for 47th place). The theme of the first two rounds — “Tiger can win this!” — had become, “He’s the bravest man on Earth!”

It kills me to write this, because I know Nantz to be a good man, but he has sacrificed his credibility at the Altar of Tiger Woods. And if he doesn’t know it, genuine golf fans, as opposed to “Tiger!” yahoos, do. And have for years.

There was no break from the obsequious, the cloying and gushing that caused the intelligent to cringe. What should have been poured on our pancakes was used to clog our senses. [great line! -- DW]

As S.J. Im putted to go 5-under Saturday, CBS’ Trevor Immelman could’ve allowed the scene to speak for itself. Instead, he told how Im was born “the year after Tiger won the Masters in 1997,” adding that Im “considers Tiger to be a god.” Not sure if he meant upper or lower case.

Good grief!

From Day 1, that this was a major was irrelevant. Countless noteworthy shots, many by the leaders, were relegated to dishonest “plausibly live” tape as CBS showed Woods, even after well out of it, walking a fairway, headed for the next hole, even waiting to hit while seated on a bench beside a tee box.

“Look! He’s smiling! You think he’s happy?”

“I hope so. He must be, he’s smiling.”

I wanted to see all of his shots, too, but wasn’t that the Masters being played in the background?

What a weekend. Two collectors’ items. Best left out for the garbage collectors.

Thanks for posting that, Don. It's good to know not every single person under the umbrella of media fawns over this has-been and actually calls out the stupid narrative for what it is: Stupid. I wish he would just go away but the masters of media won't let that happen I suppose.

Phil Mushnick is a gem here in the local NYC sports media. One of the only reasons to ever buy a newspaper anymore. Kudos to him for this much needed article!

Spieth wins The RBC at Harbor Town. Congratulations Jordan!
He’s been playing well. That’s consecutive Easter Sunday wins for the Jesuit educated Catholic. He’s adopted a weird pre-shot routine, and still yips some gimme putts, but overall encouraging.

Family obligations caused me to miss the end. I saw Speith go out at 1 behind the leader. I’m guessing the rest of the field backed up behind him?

Another bullet was dogged as Varner was in contention near the end. I believe I heard somebody mistake him for Woods. I was actually hoping an African might win: Van Roosen.

Spieth getting some great PR from The PGA Tour. He promised a hoard of young fans that he would come back sign autographs and take photos with them after he found out if he was going to be in a playoff or not. Well, he honored his promise and after he won the playoff, went through all the winning photos and the winners press conference, some two hours later, to the young fans pleasure he went out wearing the winners Tartan Jacket and signed all autographs. The way the PGA put it, sounds as if some players won't honor their promises.
Thank you, Jordan for providing us with some great golf over the last 9-10 years, but thanks even more for the person you are. Here's to many more wins and a long career on The PGA Tour.

Thanks for posting that Carolina Speed. In this day and age, it's very good to read something like that.

Kevin Na resigns from tour.

To flesh that out, Na is resigning because he's going to play in the inaugural event of the new upstart rival to the PGA Tour, the Saudi-backed LIV Series, whose first event is next week in London. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has said that any players from the PGA who play LIV events are barred from the Tour, and Na, ranked 33rd in the world, is the first PGA player to sign on with the LIV, which is being heavily promoted by Greg Norman.

I don't have enough information yet to have an opinion on the LIV Series, we'll see if it has staying power or not. If enough international players are recruited and it's backed by the Saudis, it may well succeed.

Having had time to look at the decision, I can only think Na did this to avoid a suspension from the US Open.

The tour might not organise the majors, but the clout they have, may still put him in jeopardy.

Not sure of the legality around this. Should be fleshed out a bit more in coming days and weeks.

A confidential source has said x6 players have resigned including Na.

Bradlee Chamblee gave his reasoning for Na to resign. He would still be able to play the Majors and also be able to invest in his pension fund. The PGA would not continue to invest in it but it was probably the most lucrative pension fund in all of sport. Chamblee also said Na had made over 38 million dollars playing golf.

Dustin Johnson resigns !!

Wow.. that's interesting.. Johnson has lost his luster a bit (formerly ranked # 1) but still a legit threat for most tournaments. I'm still a fan of Mickelson but not really sure where I stand on the LIV Tour honestly as I don't know all the motivations for a rival tour. In general my impression is that the guaranteed contracts/ money ruin the the true meritocracy of the sport where you need to earn it/ perform to make the cut and win. It is also really cool to hear some of the stories about the Monday qualifiers, Open tournaments and guys from other tours who made their way to compete and win on the PGA tour.
